Formatosi all'interno della scuola storica, visse in prima persona la crisi culturale e metodologica di inizio secolo, mettendo in discussione il metodo dei maestri e avvicinandosi all'estetica crociana. La sua concezione della filologia romanza lo portò a uscire dai confini del medioevo e a inoltrarsi nella modernità, con uno sguardo intrinsecamente comparato alle tradizioni letterarie dei paesi romanzi (Italia, Francia e Spagna in particolare). Il volume offre un'approfondita indagine sui più importanti campi di studio del filologo abruzzese, rintracciando continuità e discontinuità di un percorso critico complesso e variegato.
