1910005262Japan 1910. Hardcover. Very Good -. 15 x 20 cm. album containing 52 postcards 47 of them hand-colored. Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. The hand-colored views are of streets scenes temples and parks in Yohohama Kamakura Tokyo Kyoto Nara and Kamata; a number include geishas. There are two views of women in Yoshiwara. A complete list is available on request. In Very Good- Condition: front board is detached and is chipped along the lower edge and upper corners; color is bright on front board; postcards are clean and bright without chipping. hardcover

The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains a list of people who contributed to the Union Benevolent Association for the previous year with the amount given as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked. The male officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled and creased; 3-cm. closed tear at upper corner of front wrapper; internally clean and tight. Merrihew & Thompson, printers paperback

In general the section on Paris presents the fascinating and slightly scandalous world first dramatised for the world in Puccini's La Bohème. The section on London emphasizes the city's history and architecture. A heavy book; for international shipping it will have to be sent by priority international. The extreme popularity of Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva 1802-1894 or Louis Kossuth as he was known in English is indicated by the publisher naming this literary annual for him. He had served as Hungary's president during the revolution of 1848-49; in 1851 he spent time in London before coming to the United States. He arrived in New York in Dec. 1851 as this volume appeared to a hero's welcome including a visit to the White House with President Millard Fillmore. The volume includes: 5 plates engraved by John Sartain; 2 works by Metta Victoria Fuller 1831-1885: The City of Night and The Wo-Prophet of Jerusalem; an engraving of the Crystal Palace; The Fear of Being an Old Maid by Mrs. E. H. Hall; and a biography of Kossuth. Very scarce. In Good- Condition: edges of spine and corners are rubbed; loss at ends of spine; cloth is separating along front joint; cloth is soiled and faded; front hinge is separating; old dampstain at lower corner of a few leaves; foxing throughout; otherwise clean and solid.
