This report summarizes responses to a state-wide survey about women's wages in department stores and other retail establishments providing statistics on wages by both city and age group. Votes for Women. 8 x 5.5 in. 2 pages. Published by the Liberal Publication Department. Leaflet No. 2520. "By the Representation of the People Act of 1918 women are given the Parliamentary Vote for the first time. It is estimated that the number of women thus enfranchised will be six million." The Representation of the People Act of 1918 granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification. The same Act gave the vote to all men over the age of 21. As a result of this act 8.5 million women joined the electorate and made up almost 40% of all voters in the United Kingdom. This was a great victory for the women's suffrage movement which had been calling for voting rights since the 1830s. Militant suffrage groups in the UK were even known for campaigns of destruction and mayhem in order to keep their issue in the forefront of everyone's minds. Horizontal fold line ¼" from top edge. Women press for the vote in this handbill by expressing their unique perspective and concerns on the effects of War including the labor to maintain the US economy health care for war casualties and support for widows and orphans. The pamphlet lists 9 questions on who pays the social costs of men leaving for foreign wars; for each question the answer is Women. WWI began in 1914 and in these early years the United States was declared neutral in the conflict. "Vote for the Women Suffrage Amendment in November." While Pennsylvania voters rejected the 1915 referendum to grant women of the state the right to vote the state was the 7th to ratify the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote on the federal level. Paper is brittle. Chips and small losses to top and bottom edges and 2 closed tears along left edge. Still god to very good condition. Rows and rows of women sitting in front of sewing machines gaze into the camera. While single women faced barriers to employment wives and mothers confronted prejudice that put their jobs at risk after marriage and childbirth. As women took advantage of expanded access to jobs with the advent of factory lines a new push was made for job security and upward mobility. The women's employment movement first picked up traction in the industrial revolution as women fought to secure fair hours and wages for female factory workers; In the late 1870s and 80s women's organizations lobbied for safe conditions and job protection for married women and mothers; and through the 20th century expansion of skilled female labor including civil service publishing and medicine. Some of the most radical labor organizing in the West happened thanks to women in the textiles industry as women fought to secure prosperity and safety under new work conditions. 17112Woman Microbiologist at Rutgers Tests for Antibiotic. Original silver gelatin print press photograph. 8 x 10 in. No date but 1940's-1950'. Typed press caption pasted on back: "Streptomycin-Life-Saving Drug: Testing for Streptomycin the antibiotic substance whose microorganism is obtained from soil. A member of the Research Staff in Microbiology adding solution being tested to steel cylinders on an agar medium." Streptomycin was discovered in 1943 at Rutgers University; it found extensive application in the treatment of numerous infectious diseases and was the first antibiotic cure for tuberculosis TB. In 1952 Waksman was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in recognition "for his discovery of streptomycin the first antibiotic active against tuberculosis." It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. The World Health Organization classifies it as critically important for human medicine. Dorothy Sloan Rare Books auction catalogues are recognized as models of their kind and feature an unusually broad array of printed books maps manuscripts and ephemera and are particularly strong in 19th-century materials. In many instances Sloan's bibliographic descriptions have become the description of record.<br/>She began her career at John Howell in San Francisco and thence to Jenkins Company in Austin. The earliest book in the collection is Sally Hastings' Poems on different subjects. To which is added a descriptive account of a family tour to the West. Lancaster 1808. The author describes her travels from Lancaster County to Washington PA. through the Alleghenies and gives an account of the Ohio River at Pittsburgh.<br/><br/>Only a handful of titles in the collection were published in the last 30 years the "newest" one dated 1996 namely: Anne Butler and Ona Siporin Uncommon common women. which contains culturally and ethnically diverse accounts of women who lived in the American West.<br/><br/>The physical size of the collection is considerable. Without any packing material it would encompass 15 large boxes. There are photographs gum cards engravings various inscribed books plays of the California Gold Rush memoirs and captivity narratives travelogues captivity narratives autobiographies Western novels pamphlets private press material a few 'zines journals catalogues and magazines. It is the culmination of decades of labor spanning all genres in the Western Americana tradition. The collection represents women's voices of a myriad of ethnicities including various Native American tribes African and African-American women Hispanic women prostitutes madams cowgirls ranchers pioneers and their struggles in the face of physical social and cultural adversity. <br/><br/>We are reluctant to mention "highlights" as it would suggest that "lowlights" do not merit attention from scholars and bibliophiles alike. We invite readers to peruse the Inventory of the collection capably prepared by Hunter Corb to allow readers to make that determination for themselves. <br/><br/>Included is the first edition of Miriam Colt's autobiography which describes her ill-fated expedition to Kansas Went to Kansas 1862 in which she traveled more than 1300 miles to establish a communal vegetarian colony. Colt provides vivid and frightening details of a family's ordeals on the frontier landscape including severe illness and encounters with lawless gangs. Defrauded of their investment in the Vegetarian Settlement Company the Colts left Kansas in the fall of 1856. Colt's husband and son died en route leaving only mother and daughter to return to New York. <br/><br/>Another work of interest is Sarah Hopkins's Life Among the Piutes an autobiography written at the encouragement of Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is considered to be the first book written and published in English by a Native American woman. It provides "extensive information about pre-White northern Paiute culture the types of foods marriage and other social practices as well as political leadership" Paher while simultaneously increasing awareness and sympathy for the plight of Native Americans. <br/><br/>Melinda Rankin's Twenty Years Among the Mexicans describes her missionary labor in south Texas and Mexico. Herein are depicted the experiences of the first Protestant woman missionary in Latin America. Although laws in Mexico at the time forbade the introduction of any form of Protestantism into the country Rankin traveled there in 1852 and established the first Protestant mission in Northern Mexico continuing her work there for a few decades before returning to the United States due to health problems. This narrative describes not just Rankin's missionary labors but also many dramatic events in Texas and Mexico including revolutionary turmoil the American Civil War and her capture by the notorious military leader rancher and outlaw Juan Cortina.<br/><br/>From early settlers of the West during and shortly after the American Revolution; to ranchers and pioneering women in the early days of the Republic of Texas and the fight for independence; to overland travels in covered wagons on the famed Oregon Trail at the outset of the American Civil War; to excursions into Mexico and Latin America at the end of the 19th and into the 20th centuries. 1972706441972. A small archive of photographic negatives with contact sheets showing a protest in New York of the headquarters of the Olivetti typewriter headquarters in 1972. The protest was a response to an unfortunate advertising campaign promoting "brainy" typewriters that were supposed to eliminate the typing errors made by incompetent secretaries. A TV commercial showed a secretary as a vacuous pin-up girl who found that she could attract men by becoming an "Olivetti girl". This infuriated a group of New York City secretaries backed by members of the National Organization of Women which picketed Olivetti's headquarters at 500 Park Avenue "Rebel Secretaries" Time 20 March 1972. The photographs shot in black and white by an unknown photographer show women with protest signs outside the headquarters. Additional photos show a man setting up the "Olivetti Weary Protestors Relief Bar" where "the liberator" was being served: "one part orange juice one part Cointreau one part champagne." The Italian typewriter company founded in 1909 is credited with manufacturing the first programmable desktop computer the Programma 101 launched at the 1964 World's Fair. unknown books

Plates are lithographs on a vellum type paper with original hand coloring heightened with gum Arabic. <br/><br/>Two original antique prints from 'Moeurs Usages Et Costumes De Tous Les Peuples Du Monde' by Auguste Wahlen. The plate illustrations are brightly colored and intricately detailed characterization of the traditional costumes of a Persian Nobleman and woman of Iran Persia. The Persian nobleman's costume entails a vibrant red fur-lined coat which covers a gold-colored ensemble topped off with a matching fur hat. The text accompanying the illustration is in Dutch roughly translating to "Persian noble from the state". The Persian Woman is depicted in tradition costume as imagined by Europeans in the 1800's. The woman is shown reclining on a bed of patterned cushions holding a hookah in her right hand. She is captured in a rich red-colored pant a green and white striped top with gold-colored embroidery and an embellished royal blue hat to compliment the coat of the same color. The text below reads: "Dama Persa - Asia" Persian Lady - Asia. Both prints are in good condition and very decorative. unknown books

Title "Photographs" in gilt. 230 snapshots in a variety of sizes most 3.5" x 4.5" inches but also 2.25" x 3.5" 1.5" x 2.25" and 7" x 5". Both black and white and sepia in glossy and matte finishes. Very occasionally torn along the fold and minor silvering to a few photos. The life of three sisters growing up in the Midwest is captured with warmth and incredible detail creating a culturally significant document of middle-class family life between the World Wars. The majority are captioned in white pencil or white ink with the name of the person in the photo and a brief description like "Sunday best"; some are a little ironic tone such as "Seeking sunburn" underneath a photo of two of the sisters sweaty and bare armed in a row boat and "No water but our tongues" under a picture of the sisters as little children in bathing suits on their porch pulling silly faces. We follow the women from childhood through early adulthood through their schools and summer camps across suburban Ohio the shores of Michigan and the wooded Ozarks. The private lives of these young girls are revealed to be impish spirited and silly in these intimate photographs; At the same time they were growing up in a period of great change. With the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 they were the first generation of women to come of age in a time when they could exercise the right to vote. Very good condition.<br/><br/>A souvenir album that was presented as a reward to Mary A. Hanson a young student on March 31 1860 for outstanding spelling work in the previous school year. Mary's teacher inscribed a dedication to her on the first page about how the book should be used to keep treasured memories: "Some of the happiest emotions of our nature arise from the remembrance of friends. Their names are dear; their words of love and friendship as mementos of the past calling up pleasant memories are dearer still to the heart. This book should be the repository of friendly names and of the purest thoughts and feelings that spring from the innermost depths of loving hearts. Sincerity purity and truth should characterize each thought feeling wish or sentiment here expressed. Wisdom Hope Innocence and Love should reign supreme." She finishes with best wishes for Mary as the school year ends: "May love and friendship here unite to lay their offerings on thy shrine; And friends with gems and flowers bright a wreath of love for thee entwine."
