8°, pp.CXI (1), t. cart. marm. coevo. In barbe. Timbretto ex libris. Lievi fioriture.

Vignetta incisa all'acquaforte entro ovale al frontespizio.

1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 16 pages ; 23 cm. Gotthard Deutschs Rabbinic scholarly and rabbinic opinions on a wide variety of issues including one of the first rabbinic opinions (perhaps, the first ever published opinion) the use of Pyrex in Kosher Kitchens: not knowing what Pyrex is, I must be guided by the information that it is glass , as well as Burial of a Non-Jew in a Jewish Cemetery, the question of whether a congregation can sell its synagogue, the question of Divorce in the Case of an Insane Husband, and The Right to Change and Interpret the Law in Accordance with the Needs of the Age. Gotthard Deutsch (1859 1921) , also spelled Gottard Deutsch, was a scholar of Jewish history In 1891, at the invitation of Isaac Mayer Wise, Deutsch moved to the United States to accept the chair of Jewish history and philosophy at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. After eleven years of teaching there, he was appointed dean. In February 1903, after the death of Moses Mielziner, he was designated acting president of the college, a position he held until October of the same year One of the turning points in Deutsch's life came with the United States's entry into World War I. His lifelong love for Germany had led Deutsch to support Woodrow Wilson's neutrality while aligning himself with the People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace. In the tide of anti-German hysteria, Deutsch found himself alone and ostracized. He spoke out singularly, sometimes bitterly, against his adopted country's wartime role. On 5 October 1917, federal agents and local detectives raided the council's headquarters. (Wikipedia, 2017) OCLC lists just 2 copies worldwide (HUC, NLI) , and none on the East Coast. Damp stains/Discoloration to front Wrapper. Some wear throughout. Very good- condition. Rare. (AMR-52-25)

Very light shelfwear to book and DJ else fine. ; This volume contains a series of articles that examine the Roman family in Italy and the empire using a wide range of evidence and considering a number of critical issues. Its focus on regional differences in family structure, forms of marriage, and kinship patterns make it the first publication to include targeted study of the family in the Roman provinces. The chapters cover Roman Egypt, Judaea, Spain, Gaul, North Africa, and Pannonia, and make use of both conventional textual sources and epigraphic evidence and material that is less frequently treated, including the medical writers and the Justinianic receipts. ; 378 pages
