Nell'antichità l'aborto era fondamentalmente una questione di donne, il feto era considerato una sorta di appendice del corpo della madre, e l'aborto era perseguibile solo nei casi in cui ledeva un interesse maschile. È il cristianesimo che per primo equipara l'aborto all'omicidio, ma ci vorranno secoli per codificare il momento in cui avviene l'animazione del feto. La situazione muta radicalmente tra il Sei e Settecento quando il feto acquista una sua autonomia, grazie alle acquisizioni scientifiche, e con la Rivoluzione francese, dopo il 1789, entra nella sfera pubblica. Con il movimento femminista e con la depenalizzazione dell'aborto oggi molti segnali ci dicono che qualcosa sta cambiando: l'aborto è una questione di tutti, donne e uomini.

Attraverso un'analisi comparata tra la teoria malthusiana del controllo delle nascite, le interpretazioni della teoria darwiniana dell'evoluzione per selezione naturale e la teoria moreliana della degenerazione, è stata delineata la cornice storico-concettuale all'interno della quale, nell'Italia post-unitaria, raggiunse il suo apice la discussione sulla contraccezione. Per di più, dall'esame approfondito di illuminanti fonti del periodo trattato, sono emerse alcune tra le principali contraddizioni della morale sessuale che contribuirono a determinare il significato di concetti come quello di "pudore" e "normalità sessuale". Soprattutto, poi, oltre a trattare la più nota bibliografia sulla questione del controllo delle nascite, nel presente volume si è voluta rimarcare l'importanza di un periodico di divulgazione popolare pubblicato in Italia tra il 1913 e il 1915: la rivista di neomalthusianismo e di eugenica «L'educazione sessuale». Con la sua pubblicazione si concretizzò, in Italia, uno dei primi tentativi di cimentarsi in una propaganda, libera e senza tabù, su sessualità e contraccezione, con la consapevolezza che una buona educazione sessuale avrebbe rappresentato un elemento essenziale per la salvaguardia del nostro paese.
