19131298161913. First Edition. POTTER Beatrix. The Tale of Pigling Bland. London and New York: Frederick Warne 1913. 16mo original maroon boards mounted cover illustration pictorial endpapers. $1700.First edition of Potters story of two piglets escape into a new life illustrated with frontispiece 14 color plates and 37 in-text vignettes. The Tale of Pigling Bland was Potter's 19th book the second title to appear in the ""New Series"" and the last she published before her marriage to William Heelis. The book ""has an element of truth in it"" for in November 1909 in a letter to Millie Warne Potter wrote ""The two biggest little pigs have been sold which takes away from the completeness of the family group. But they have fetched a good price and their appetites were fearfulfive meals a day and not satisfied"" Linder 213. Indeed Pigling Bland concerns two real pigs Potter called Alexander and Pigling Bland; Potter herself appears in her drawing on page 22 along with Alexander. ""With its intimate fireside scenes and shared adventures Pigling Bland is almost a love story. However 'the portrait of two pigs arm in arm is not a portrait of me & Mr. Heelis though it is a view of where we used to walk on Sunday afternoons! 'Over the hills and far away!' seemed to symbolize Beatrix's own escape into a new life"" Taylor et al. 148 152. First edition with 1913 on title page; first and second printings believed identical Linder 429. Without scarce original glassine. Quinby 22. Linder 429. A lovely copy in fine condition. hardcover
