The story was based on a village shop in Sawrey owned by John Taylor when Potter bought Hill Top farm so the book is dedicated to him. <br />From the personal library of MAURICE SENDAK with his Jennie bookplate pasted verso front free endpaper. Laid in is a Sendak notecard with a design from <i>The Bat-Poet</i> inscribed <i>"A very special book for very special Lynn -- on her Birthday! With all my love Maurice May April '90"</i> the recipient being Lynn Caponera who began working for the artist in 1972 as caretaker of his Connecticut house and eventually became his care-giver chief beneficiary and president of The Maurice Sendak Foundation. A scarce early French language edition of Potter's classic translated into English by Victorine Ballon and Julienne Profichet.Illustrated with colour endpapers a colour frontispiece and twenty-seven further plates all by Potter herself. Collated complete.An early French edition identified via the endpapers matching those used for 'Johnny Town Mouse' in 1918 Linder Design 6 but with two additional illustrations not present in the first French edition.Potter's beloved tale of Peter Rabbit following the young Peter as he is chased through Mr. McGregor's garden.An initial French translation had been under consideration since as early as 1907 but Beatrix Potter was unhappy with the version then proposed; in 1912 three further translators were approached by Warne and of the translations supplied Potter felt that the one by Victorine Ballon was the most suitable. In the publisher's original paper covered boards rebacked with paper. Pictorial onlay to front board. Light tide marks to boards. Hinges strained and slightly tender.
