However "the shops sensibly refused to stock them because they got unrolled and so bad to fold up again" Linder p. 183 and the title was brought into line with the rest of the series in 1916. The first edition first issue of this work. Quinby 12 with 'London & New York' to the rear board and lavender marbled endpapers. This is one of only two Potter titles issued in this panorama format as children struggled not to break them. Illustrated with fourteen text panels and fourteen water-colour panels by Potter mounted on linen and folded in accordion style. Collated complete. With a contemporary owner's inscription dated 1906 to the front pastedown. In this charming tale a bad-tempered rabbit steals a carrot from a kind young rabbit but gets his comeuppance when a hunter shoots at him mistakenly identifying him as a bird. In the publisher's original envelope style cloth binding with small pictorial onlay to front flap. Tuck in flap renewed. Cloth lightly age toned with rubbing and light fraying to back strip heads and tails. Tide marks to pastedowns with former owner's inscription to one pastedown. Major tide marks to title page.
