Topography and marshlands are impressively depicted with relief shown by hachure. The coastline is rendered in great detail with inlets shoals lighthouses and other features labeled. This map includes an inset of Charleston Harbor and its approaches including depths by soundings. <br> <br> Ormando W. Gray was a map publisher active in the later half of the 19th century. A civilian engineer and surveyor he worked with several other map publishers like Henry Walling and Colton. His state and county atlases are well known. Frank A. Gray presumably a relative produced many maps that were published by the family firm O.W. Gray & Sons. This map is a lovely example of their work.<br/> <br/> O.W. Gray & Son unknown

His political allegiances shifted over the years from his support for Stephen A. Douglas to his later support for the Union cause. He worked in favor of reconstruction policies and was a vigorous defender of President U.S. Grant and an advocate for the Federal Government to regulate railroads. A complete set of Irving's Sharkespeare bound in red half calf with red cloth boards. The book are extremely clean throughout occasionally with minor foxing lovely creamy pages. There are numerous woodcut illustrations. The bindings are tight and clean with signs of rubbing to extremities and some delamination of the leather. The joints of three volumes are sound the final volume having the front joint cracked and with loss to leather on front board. This one also has a scrape to the spine. Nevertheless all books present well and are internally very clean. A very nice set! These books will require extra postage. <br/> <br/> BLACKIE AND SON unknown
