Burr 1803-1875 served as Topographer to the United States Post Office and Geographer to the House of Representatives and was widely known for his accuracy and attention to detail. 186100105741861-1862. Quarto 1 page; 2 octavo letters: one letterhead shows the portrait of Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont; the other shows the Star Spangled Banner. each with the original mailing envelopes with postage and cancellations. Note: the larger letter is boldly written while the small letters a very faded. Two postmarks from December 4 & 27 1861 one from Feb 1 1862. <br/><br/>The boldly written letter was written by Pvt. David H. Grim at Benton Barracks at St. Louis MO 29 January 1862. David H. Grim enlisted to Company F Iowa 14th Infantry Regiment in November 1861. Per the records he was taken captive at Shiloh probably in the middle of the "Hornet's Nest". Missing in action and taken prisoner April 6 1862. Paroled. Died of fever July 7 1862 age 26 7. David was not a speller: "to rite/rite a Leter to you to Let yow now that I am well at this time . i am in the tens . think well stay here this winter. worth we hant had any supper here worth wile to menth here". " General Prentiss having already surrendered with a part of his command the Fourteenth was left in advance of all that remained but completely enclosed receiving the enemy's fire from three directions. The regiment still kept its ranks unbroken and held its position facing the enemy but the men were almost completely exhausted with a whole day of brave and steady fighting and many of them had spent their whole stock of ammunition. It was therefore useless to think of prolonging a resistance which could only have wasted their lives to no purpose and at about a quarter to six P. M. surrendered them and myself prisoners of war. I have only to add that I feel under the deepest obligation to both officers and men of my regiment for their admirable conduct through the day. This was so complete and free from exception that it would be impossible to mention individuals without doing injustice to the rest. Their steadiness and courage the accuracy of their fire and precision of all their movements entitle them to the highest credit and their general demeanor both upon the battle field and in the trying scenes through which we passed as prisoners of war will always be remembered by me with pride and gratification." - Col. Original blind-stamped Cloth with title in gilt on spine. xv 16 - 255 pp. blank plus 7 pp. of Advertisements Introduction Appendix. Graff 897 says "Howes and Wagner-Camp suggest doubt about the veracity of the author the "lost trappers" were from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Some statements in the work are demonstrably untrue but there are sections which may be proven authentic." Coyner a Presbyterian preacher sojourning in Missouri claims to have compiled this narrative on behalf of a Virginia newspaper seeking frontier material basing it on an old musty mutilated journal kept by Ezekial Williams a Kentucky-born trapper. The main incidents concern the wanderings and adventures and his colleagues in the Rocky Mountains from 1809 to 1813 and the overland journey of two of them - the "Lost Trappers" - to California in 1809-1810. One of the early pictures of California. Professionally rebacked with original cloth spine retained and a little touch-up to corners. Modest amount of foxing scattered throughout. In all a very good copy of a fur trade classic. Interesting small 1"x2" old label of merchant that sold this book affixed to upper front endpaper reads: A. D. Sproat Druggist Chillicothe O. J. A. & U. P. James, 1847. hardcover

Lake Champlain forms the right border of the region and Lake Placid yet unnamed appears in the upper left. The map denotes major routes waterways and topographical details and icons label villages flouring mills factories forges saw mills and churches. This first edition of Burr's county map appeared in his "Atlas of the State of New York" of the same year which was the second atlas of an individual state ever published. The map is in good condition with light foxing throughout and some ink stains in the lower right margin not affecting the image. Full original margins. <br> <br> David H.
