New English Paperback. Large roy. 8vo. (23 x 18 cm). In English, Italian, and Turkish. 163 p., color and b/w photos. In between = Arada = Tra. [Exhbition catalogue]. Prep. by Ayse Orhun Gültekin. Twenty unreadable posters reflecting me that I've affixed at various locations in the city in order to communicate with the street. They were able to last for two days only, stuck between the publicity posters and Istanbul's fast changing pace. While the posters I've affixed on temporary panels or on anonymous walls also lasted for two days average, usually the people whose houses face that direction didn't want to see the posters and reacted. Additionally, these posters were collected by garbagemen the morning after. And the people passing by generally showed interest in the posters and tried to read them while questioning what they mean.

Kutlug Ataman's video and film works document the lives of marginalized individuals who explicitly give voice to their own obsessions, their relations with micro and macro power structures and verbalize straightforwardly their subliminal issues or sexuality. "I am not interested in exposing these people and turning them into a show," says Ataman, about his preference of these characters, "I only work with people that I see myself in." Ataman chooses narratives that dangle between reality and fiction in his work, which chiefly retains the documentary style. He questions how individuals manifest their identities through storytelling and how narratives are used to re-fabricate another 'self'. While offering an alternative to the categorizing structure of identity politics by putting the individual at the core, Ataman also interconnects significant issues of contemporary art today, such as historiography, social/individual identity, memory, plurality, myth, game and power. Individuals at the centre of Ataman's works narrate not over an academic, institutionalized and fixed representation of history, but over flexible performances such as personal myth-making, masking and shielding. While verbalizing personal stories, individuals expose the ease of verbal expression and persuasiveness of language. Ataman also shapes the screen layout of his video works into installation / sculpture like forms.

"This exhibition, curated by Edith Devaney, Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, presents a survey of Stephen Chambers' painting and graphic works, shown alongside his vast multi-part print, The Big Country. This selection seeks to explore the origins of The Big Country (2012), demonstrating that its development is firmly rooted in the artist's past practice and deeply indebted to the European tradition of art. The sense of a story being told is a feature of many of Chambers' works, and writings are often a stimulus for this, as seen in Chambers' Flemish Proverbs series, which are also exhibited. Inspired by the landscape and scale of the American Western film The Big Country (1958), Chambers' immense work explores a myriad of fictional encounters between real and imagined historical figures. The notion of the journey and discovery of new lands has here expanded into a depiction of the five continents and the points of departure from one continent to another, raising a fascinating take on the perils and challenges of migration. Stephen Chambers is primarily a painter, however printmaking has always formed a significant part of his work. He has noted in the past that prints produced by artists whose main discipline is not printmaking, can often be the most compelling. For such artists, print-making offers another element of expression and provides an opportunity to experiment, a notion which is borne out in Chambers' finished monumental work.".
