With a beautiful painting of two lovers in a scene called "The Cock Fight" also called "Young Greeks attending a Cock Fight" painted by Clare Brooksbank signed with her initials in the bottom left-hand corner after an 1846 "Neo-Grec" painting by Jean-Leon Gerôme 1824-1904. The original is in the Musee d'Orsay. "Gerôme portrays a couple of near-naked adolescents at the foot of a fountain. Their youthfulness contrasts with the battered profile of the Sphinx in the background. The same opposition is found between the luxuriant vegetation and the dead branches on the ground and in the fight between the two roosters one of which is doomed to die." - Jean Leongerome. The identity of Junius is open to question and debate and may never be finally resolved unless documents are found which establish his identity. On the other hand scholars now generally support the identification with Sir Philip Francis. "The case for Philip Francis first proposed by John Taylor in 1816 has established itself as by far the most probable though categorical proof is still not forthcoming" DNB. The Letters of Junius were the official letters that Junius collected refined and published in 1772. This view shows the single row boat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic but he also satisfied cultured tastes and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson and introduced him to Blair. They resided in Los Angeles at one time buying the mansion of Earle C. Anthony the founder of KABC. That mansion was donated to the Immaculate Heart Sisters in 1971 upon the death of the Countess. The couple established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of Bernardine's father to promote important Roman Catholic and other philanthropic causes. Mrs. Donohue is entombed next to Cardinal James Francis McIntyre. The "Ponte Rotto" was drawn by J.D. Harding and engraved by Edward Francis Finden ca.1834 and the fore-edge artist has used this view to apply to the edge of Clinton's Chronology of Rome. The provenance suggests that Scott was the owner through 1929 and on his death it may have found its way to Marks & Co. perhaps by scouting or by auction. From that date it is consistent with other pieces also painted by the 'Dover' painter though this tends to support the point that the earliest date this book could have received a fore-edge painting would have been in 1929. <br /><br /> PROVENANCE: Bookplate of Bernadine Murphy Donahue 1904-1968 a prominent California Catholic philanthropist who married Daniel Donahue in 1954 and established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of her father to promote Roman Catholic causes. DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING WITH EROTIC SCENES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST: With a double fore-edge painting showing bawdy "and athletic" erotic scenes painted by Martin Frost signed with both his initials and containing his handwritten colophon at rear dated 1999. Frost has painted two side-by-side fore-edges giving four vignettes in all: "Four scenes of athletic and ingenious lust" The first side shows a copulating man and woman on either a horse or on a carriage drawn by a horse after Thomas Rowlandson's works. Frost's initials are found on the lower right of this side. The reverse side shows two vertical vignettes depicting coitus on a bike rather an imaginary wheeled chair with parasol note the erect penis statue in the background and a stage scene with a partially nude woman lifting her skirt high to give a view of her genitals and a happy pot-bellied man with a huge erect penis that balances a bowl and 3 goblets he is talented! his costume of the British stage his genitals showing as if being the star of the show. Brownlow North Bishop of Winchester on the 12th of August 1802 by Special Licence at the Private Chapel at Winchester House Chelsea. . . " Very good. WITH A DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING of Philadelphia in 1790 and New York in 1820. The scene of Philadelphia shows churches buildings a harbor and shipping scene; on the reverse edge showing "New York" has various harbor buildings. Not signed; likely painted just prior to Leamington's owning this volume thus ca. 1953. The artist is not known. Often an American bookstore would import a volume acquired from an artist or a British bookstore. Provenance: W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. William Wrightson 1752-1827 of Cusworth Hall Doncaster Yorkshire was a former member of Parliament 1784-1790; his son of the same name lived 1789-1879; it is unclear which person's bookplate the name refers. Brownlow North 1741-1820 former owner family member was appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1781. DNB. More recently a pencil note within the book indicates it was purchased from Leamington Book Shop July 1953. A bookseller's clipped catalogue description appears to be that of Leamington's Price: £18 10s. ca. 1953. A later pencil note 12/98 indicates this book was priced in December 1998 at $1600. The time of Action includes Six Days and the transactions of each day occupy a Canto."<br/><br/>These two volumes were sold in 1965 by Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles Catalog 355 item 113.<br/><br/>Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Edinburgh Scotland. It is three miles 4.8Â km south-east of the city center on a low hill to the south of the modern suburb of Craigmillar. The Preston family of Craigmillar the local feudal barons began building the castle in the late 14th century and building works continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1660 the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour Lord President of the Court of Session who made further alterations. The Gilmours left Craigmillar in the 18th century and the castle fell into ruin. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. Craigmillar Castle is best known for its association with Mary Queen of Scots. Following an illness after the birth of her son the future James VI Mary arrived at Craigmillar on 20 November 1566 to convalesce. Before she left on 7 December 1566 a pact known as the "Craigmillar Bond" was made with or without her knowledge to dispose of her husband Henry Stuart Lord Darnley. Craigmillar is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. The central tower house or keep is surrounded by a 15th-century courtyard wall with "particularly fine" defensive features. Within this are additional ranges and the whole is enclosed by an outer courtyard wall containing a chapel and a doocot<br/><br/>Loch Leven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300 the castle was the location of military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence 1296-1357. In the latter part of the 14th century the castle was granted by his uncle to William Douglas 1st Earl of Douglas and remained in the Douglases' hands for the next 300 years. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567-68 and forced to abdicate as queen before escaping with the help of her gaoler's family. In 1588 the Queen's gaoler inherited the title Earl of Morton and moved away from the castle. It was bought in 1675 by Sir William Bruce who used the castle as a focal point in his garden; it was never again used as a residence. Edinburgh: Printed for Arch. With a fine fore-edge painting by the "Dover Painter" ca. 1920s of "The ruins of the Villa Maecenas at Tivoli." The title label inscribed by the artist. Shibata Toshindo was married into the Shibata family her original family name was Niwa and birthplace Nagoya. The brother of one artist and married to another she became a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and developed her skills as a painter of beautiful women. In this album she has turned her brush to a more humorous angle. In a series of 12 double page paintings she has recast the traditional "farting scroll" genre to the feminine side. Feats of strength wrestling games even the ultimate farting contest performed by robed and hopefully perfumed ladies. Fun and obviously irreverent. In very good condition. Square quarto size 140 pp. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States have led to numerous examinations of the war violence and death surrounding the attacks. "document 1961" is a collection of haunting photographs by two brilliant and acclaimed Japanese photographers Shomei Tomatsu 1930-2012 and Ken Domon 1909-1990. The photographs capture the rawness and vulnerability of the people and landscape after the bombings with images that are often dark and up-close to their subjects.<br/><br/>The work of Tomatsu and Domon is separated by a three-page fold-out painting printed in purple by husband and wife Iri and Toshiko Maruki; the paintings show several panels of bodies distorted and indistinguishable matching the gritty tone of the photographs.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Full white cloth with grey spiral designs on the front and rear boards grey lettering on the spine endpapers with black-and-white photographs title page in brown black-and-white photographs by Shomei Tomatsu and Ken Domon throughout including one three-page fold-out monochrome painting in purple by Iri Maruki and Toshiko Maruki; square quarto size 11" by 11" 140 unnumbered pages.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is very good with a strong square text block the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; cloth boards have overall light soiling very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine corners are gently bumped and there is one small crease to a corner of the fold-out painting. Housed in an early twentieth century red cloth slipcase.<br/><br/>With a splendid early twentieth century fore-edge painting by an unknown hand depicting Folly Bridge and Bacon's Tower at Oxford. <br/><br/>Folly Bridge is a stone bridge over the River Thames carrying the Abingdon Road south from the center of Oxford England. It was erected 1825-27 to designs of a little-known architect Ebenezer Perry died 1850 who practiced in London. The bridge is in two parts separated by an island. Preliminary and final decorated pages plus a 2 page table of contents and 42 double page color paintings each 28.2 X 33.4 CM ~11" X 13". In a late Shijô Kyoto-school style by Nakajima Yûshô 1837-1905 the son of Nakajima Raishô ä¸å³¶æ¥ç« 1796-1871　 and a talented artist in his own right who has been collected by the British Museum among other places.<br /> <br /> The 42 paintings illustrate the beauties of Japan mostly of western Japan with an emphasis on the beauty spots around the old capital at Kyoto. Yûshô has a wonderful way with his brush - pointillist dot leaf trees the delicate colors. you can see the quiet of the temple hear the urgent plash of waters at the waterfall. lake scenes ocean scenes mountains. Mostly empty of human figures. A natural and largely silent world. An examination reveals views entitled: Fresh Breeze at Kurise Evenglow at Seta Geese landing at Katata. some being scenes from canonical series. The geese landing at Katata is traditionally one of the EIGHT VIEWS OF OMI.<br /> <br /> Wonderful evocations of the past in traditional style with the lovely brush control of the Maruyama/Shijou School. Yûshô gives a world that must have been vanishing right before his eyes. But a world he could still see the essentials of. and give to us.<br /> <br /> In brocade covers with a brushed title label and enclosed in a clasped chitsu case. Lovely throughout delicate colors skilled brushwork. Overall a very nice presentation of the work of a skilled Shijo artist. unknown books
