19003415Elmira NY or Auburn NY 1900. Wooden blook 4.75 x 6.25". A hand-made wooden box in the shape of a 12mo book with a compartment carved from the interior and lined with blue velvet. In very good condition with a 1" x 3" section of varnish removed on the front board; scattered scratches to the surface that seem to be heavier on the rear board where the box was laid; wear and oxidation to the metallic gold used on the fore edges. AN EXCELLENT WOODEN BOOK WITH A SECRET COMPARTMENT the gift of one male prison guard to another featuring many qualities of American Folk Art.

The term "Blook" was coined by Mindell Dubansky of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; it is the contraction of the words "Book Look" and refers to an everyday object that looks like a book. Our blook is decorated with Tole paintings in green white gold orange and burgundy. The front of the blook has a decorative shield with "To Walter Long 1900" in script within a central cross; the shield is surrounded by wreath of flowers and leaves on a burgundy field with a green border that extends around the spine to the rear cover of the blook. The "spine" has a central green panel bordered in orange and decorated with arabesques in gold with the word "Friendship" in script written on a diagonal. The rear of the blook has a central shield with three horizontal panels with the words "Compliments of Elvey D. Ridley" in script on the first two horizontal panels; the shield is formed by an arabesque border and is superimposed on top of a foliate branch. The edges of the "text block" of the blook are painted metallic gold.

The secret compartment is accessed by sliding the spine of the blook downward and then outward to remove it and the compartment is revealed when a small sliding door on the front "cover" of the blook is pulled toward the spine.

Our blook is a token of friendship between two who worked at the Elmira Reformatory in 1900. Walter Long was a guard and Elvey D. Ridley was a "keeper". Ridley transferred to Auburn Prison to become a guard in 1900. It is likely that Ridley's move to Auburn prompted this gift to his friend.

A unique blook offering between two friends and a scarce instance of early 20th century folk art.

For records of the two men see: State of New York Civil Service Commission. Seventeenth Report of the State Civil Service Commission. March 13 1900 p. 793 and February 28 1901 p. 116 Albany: James B. Lyon State Printer. unknown books

653830 fine color paintings & 24 black ink drawings of various parts of the bamboo. 50 leaves. 4to 275 x 206 mm. modern bright silk brocade wrappers stitched as issued. Probably Japan: late Edo. A beautiful album of finely rendered drawings of bamboo accompanied by explanatory text. There has been a long tradition in both China since the eighth century and Japan of illustrating bamboo with much thought given to composition and the painting of the stems knots branches and leaves. A number of treatises were written on the subject. This handsomely painted manuscript contains many illustrations all finely painted or brush-drawn of bamboo. Following the title there are two leaves which are somewhat soiled illustrating the yin and yang of the three variations of bamboo painting. They include how to place the brush on the drawing surface and how to maneuver the brush and lift it at just the right moment the calligraphy techniques are named. These are followed two fine calligraphic illustrations using black ink of bamboo branches again the calligraphy methods are named followed by a leaf of instructions. Next there are 18 pages of illustrations of leaves with each illustration becoming increasingly more complex. Then the manuscript text turns to the botanical aspects of bamboo: where it grows the genera and uses appearance how to propagate etc. Both Chinese and Japanese names are given with references to the classic botanical guide Ben cao gang mu Compendium of Materia Medica. Next we have 28 fine full-page illustrations of many genera of bamboo some pages contain multiple images each preceded by text describing the examples depicted. They are very vividly colored and finely painted using many techniques including the application of mica. Among the elaborate and richly colored illustrations are cross-sections roots sprouts leaves and fruits. Some of the examples are very exotic. Now we come upon two full-page color illustrations of tools for cutting and trimming bamboo and for the extraction and preparation of medicines with two pages of explanatory text. Finally we have a section with six artistic renderings of bamboo in art and literature. They include various iconic Chinese scenes including variations of literati in bamboo groves and the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. Each painting is preceded by a leaf of text with a description and historical background of the scene. In fine condition. A contemporary reader has made some neat annotations in red ink. Final leaf has the artist's pen name written "Seigetsu an." Several minor and marginal wormholes. Preserved in a chitsu. unknown books

1916FF2441London:: Constable & Company Ltd. 1916. 1916. Series: Makers of the nineteenth century edited by Basil Williams. Crown 8vo. viii 479 1 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Abraham Lincoln at Springfield index large folding map. Specially bound for Sotheran by Riviere & Son in full black gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt; neatly rebacked preserving the original spine. Preserved with the original chemise and cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped calf spine label: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN - LORD CHARNWOOD - 1916 - FORE-EDGE PAINTING". This is also a very rare specimen with the original chemise and box extant. Provenance: ownership names of R. Joseph Rich Margaret Rich Carr; Joseph Sampsell Carr. Fine. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING BY MS. C. B. CURRIE showing "a view of Harper's Ferry W. Virginia." "This is No. 145 of the Books with Fore-edge Paintings by Miss Currie. . . " Painted ca. 1928/9. See: Weber p. 341 #145 was previously unknown. Currie painted a scene of Harper's Ferry on the Life of John Brown See Weber A8 p. 348. SIGNED IN INK AT FOOT OF LIMITATION PAGE BY C. B. CURRIE. / In all about 172 Currie fore-edge painting were painted. Each is numbered in consecutive order with her known active period of painting fore-edges from c.1909/10-1929/33. All Currie fore-edge paintings are rare. / Miss Caroline Billin Curry aka "Miss. C.B. Currie" 1849-1940 was famous for painting both ivory miniatures and on fore-edge paintings exclusively for Sotheran's and strictly on Riviere bindings. Currie is important as being the only known artist to have signed all her work and numbered the pieces. She was highly touted in her lifetime as an artist who was singled-out for her skill and exquisite artistry that she thereby became the first artist so-named by Sotheran prominently in their catalogue series. Indeed she was a close associate and friend of the shop manager Mr. John Harrison Stonehouse and his wife Currie was named in their will. Even despite her prominence Currie's correct full name was a mystery until very recently. See Weber. This particular specimen was 1 previously unknown to myself 2 preserved the most-frequently missing chemise and 3 a clear provenance to this copy is noted the only one so located by myself. / PROVENANCE: Oddly this is the first known Currie fore-edge painting with provenance that is understood to be after the painting of the Harper's Ferry scene. The importance of that is the relationship of the ownership of a book to the date of the painting or otherwise owning a book before a fore-edge painting is applied to the book. In this case the ownership is surely after the work of Currie. Three persons' names are found in the volume: Joseph Sampsell Carr may have lived in Chicago Illinois. Margaret Rich Carr may have been Margaret Lee Smith Rich Carr 1917-1981 buried in Lubbock Lubbock County Texas. R. Joseph Rich may have been associated with Jefferson Medical College Hospital Philadelphia. REFERENCE: Jeff Weber Annotated Dictionary of Fore-edge Painting & Binders 2010. 1801FF178London:: Printed for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies by G.R. Clarke 1801. 1801. Small 8vo. xx ii 232 pp. Original full dark navy blue straight-grained morocco gilt Greek-key tooling surround five raised bands elaborate gilt compartments all edges gilt. Very good . With a fine fore-edge painting under the gilt showing "Christchurch in Hampshire here James Fordyce lived." With an early typed note relating to the painting. The artist possibly copied the engraving "Christchurch Hampshire" from the print by E. Finden after a picture by W. Westall published in Great Britain Illustrated 1830. This view shows the single row boat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic but he also satisfied cultured tastes and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson and introduced him to Blair. He gave sympathetic account in Addresses to the Deity 1785 of Johnson's religious character speaking as an evangelical moderate." DNB. Printed for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, by G.R. 1853FF2400Oxford:: University Press 1853. 1853. 8vo. vi 524 2 pp. Index. Original full dark green morocco stamped "Fortem Posce Animum" "Pray for a strong will" - Juvenal and on the lower cover: Honi soit qui Mal y Pense" = "Evil to him who evil thinks"; joints rubbed. Student's prize for George Rodney Scott d. March 3 1929 at Winchester College July 8 1866. later a Fellow of Merton College; bookplate of Bernardine Murphy. Very good. With a fore-edge painting by the "Dover" artist "Ponte Rotti Rome." With the title hand-written by the artist. Painted ca.1920-30s. Fore-edge painting of "Rotti Bridge Rome." The "Ponte Rotto" was drawn by J.D. Harding and engraved by Edward Francis Finden ca.1834 and the fore-edge artist has used this view to apply to the edge of Clinton's Chronology of Rome. The provenance suggests that Scott was the owner through 1929 and on his death it may have found its way to Marks & Co. perhaps by scouting or by auction. From that date it is consistent with other pieces also painted by the 'Dover' painter though this tends to support the point that the earliest date this book could have received a fore-edge painting would have been in 1929.

PROVENANCE: Bookplate of Bernadine Murphy Donahue 1904-1968 a prominent California Catholic philanthropist who married Daniel Donahue in 1954 and established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of her father to promote Roman Catholic causes.
