From the very first highly significant works commissioned of him his rebellious impulse against the constraints of a classicism then in crisis is clearly evident. An aggressive and iconoclastic spirit Rosso Fiorentino made a fundamental contribution in his subsequent works to the richest and most disquieting current of the Maniera proposing compositions that were tormented convulsive and animated by an expressionism bordering on caricature. The author sketches a personal profile of him within the pages of this volume offering numerous insights into the art of one of the most audacious and poetic creators in the history of Western art. Titled <strong>"Paul Delvaux and the Antiquity"</strong> the exhibition features 60 oil paintings and drawings from private and public collections in Europe and the United States as well as from major European institutions such as the Delvaux Foundation and the Roual Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium which is also co-organizing the show together with the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation. This is the first time that the oeuvre of this exceptionally important Belgian artist of the 20th century is shown to Greece in an exhibition. Paul Delvaux contributed to modern art his very unique and personal expression as far as the genre of the female nude is concerned. Further to this he established new modulations regarding the space in which painting takes action. He pursued his pictorial stride within the symbolic codes of James Ensor the mysterious metaphysical tension of Giorgio de Chirico and the iconographic poetry of Ren Magritte and although he never accepted the full title of the surrealist painter he is considered to be an established representative of this major artistic movement. The exhibition focuses mainly on the references and the relations Delvaux developed with Greece through the myths and the inexhaustible Greek subject-matter from which he systematically extracted facts and elements in order to interweave his own personal subjective mythology.</p><p>Curator of the exhibition was Michel Draguet director of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium Brussels. His works stand out for their perfection of composition chromatic harmony expressive frugality esoteric feeling and Greekness in the positive sense. They are filled with Greek light and are pioneering despite their temperate conservatism. Papaloukas refused the sterile mimicry of what was called "Greekness" in the visual arts at the time in the sense of reiterating mainly Byzantine models preferring to directly delve into their deeper meaning. It was unthinkable for him to fall into the repetition of earlier forms of expression. He always looked ahead. He believed in the potential of Greek artists and in their attempt to contribute dynamically to the international art scene. An encounter that was held at the Benaki Museum in cooperation with the Tsarouchis Foundation 4 July-23 September 2002 as a tribute to the great set and costume designer and painter Lila de Nobili 1916-2002. Lila de Nobili associated her name with theatrical and operatic works that left their mark on the aesthetics of stage design in postwar Europe. Her meeting with Yannis Tsarouchis during the 1960s and 1970s particularly during the years of his self-exile in France evolved into a close and lifelong friendship and into an on-going dialogue about the essence of painting and art more generally. In this book more than 200 works by Lila de Nobili have been gathered together from the Yannis Tsarouchis Museum and private collections as well as samples of her work in the theatre and the opera models for sets costume designs etc. and of her skill as a painter illustrations of books impressions of Italy etc. At the same time works by Yannis Tsarouchis are presented that demonstrate the artistic kinship and common concerns of the two artists. // Se trata del catalogo que acompana a la exposicion Lila de Nobili Giannis Tsarouhis. Lila de Nobili conecto su nombre con creaciones dramaticas y operisticas que marcaron la estetica de la escenografia en la Europa de la postguerra.
