Unusually tan covers with a deeply incised blind-stamped cloud pattern on front and rear covers. The paper label is present glued to the inside front cover. Could these be alternative original covers A complete copy with the title page pasted to the inner front cover Hokusai's own two page preface dated 1836 30 sheets of images and 1 sheet of colophon and ads. It has the "77 year old" Hokusai with his "Gakyou Rojin" moniker indicating the book itself was soon to appear followed by 3 sequels. only two were done. It also lists the block carvers. Egawa and Sugita. masters of the craft. Also see Hillier's ART OF THE JAPANESE BOOK for his appreciation of this work. The bookstore list often found at the end appears not to have been bound in or was lost. Very minor soiling throughout. Very good impressions. An early printing of this important and often reprinted work.<br /> The Wakan EHON SAKIGAKE was the first volume of Hokusai's so-called "warrior trilogy". It is a visual epitome of traditional Japanese and Chinese historical heroes from the legendary to the flesh and blood. This Meiji reprint of Hokusai's classic is in very good condition with original yellow covers and title labels. The impressions are fair to good and preserve the remarkable aesthetic sense of the master. AN ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINTED PAGE . . . FROM AN UNKNOWN HOKUSAI E-HON . . THE SCENE: Family Quarrel: . A lovely sheet extracted from an unknown color book. The scene shows a Samurai hiding behind a column prepares to draw his Samurai sword. He observes a woman holding an armor helmet while talking to an old Samurai man. . He holds a roll of Washi handmade mulberry paper. It looks like he may begin to offer his life by committing ritual "Harakiri" suicide to pay for his mis-deeds and embarrassment. He only has his Sho short sword in his belt. Typically Samurai always carry "Dai Sho" long & short sword set on their person at all times. . Color photos are posted to our website. . CONDITION: The print is an original color woodblock printed page from an unknown Hokusai E-hon illustrated book. It has been trimmed following the black key block lines. . There are three tiny old worm holes 2 are mended from the back the third is at the top edge where the print is gently tipped on to the stiff card and not mended . . There is a small blemish at the lower right corner it looks like a 'thumb' mark meaning this was the right corner of the bound book where readers 'thumbed' to the next page. It is minor feint but present. . Otherwise the print is without issue. . A lovely original Hokusai item nicely woodblock printed in colors. . . unknown

FIRST EDITION . . . HOKUSAI ILLUSTRATION OF A KIDOHMARU SEATED ON A RAM . An excellent view of Kidohmaru extracted from an unidentified Hokusai E-hon. . KIDOHMARU: is an Oni a mythological Demon that appears in the Kamakura period collection of Setsuwa the KOKON CHOMONJU stories among other sources. Please see the wikipedia link below for copious details. . THE SCENE: This shows an excellent view of Kidohmaru a Samurai holding his Wakizashi long sword as he is leaning on a ram. In the background is a bronze bell behind which is a fingernail moon of a very dark night. . Kidohmaru has his Kimono open his long messy hair is wild indicating he is a Demon. status. . He sniffs the "Sumi" ink stick to see if it is made from the most luxurious and fragrant camphor wood. . He is seated before his 'Sumi-zuri" "ink stone" and is preparing to paint. . There are several scrolls in the background in a bamboo basket. . Hokusai followed the Chinese classics of literature and lovingly illustrated them using his imagination. This example is from his book SUIKODEN. His interest & respect for the old classics is reflected in his illustrating several Chinese classics of literature. . Color photos are posted to our website. . KATSUSHIKI HOKUSAI 1760-1849: . He was simply known as Hokusai he was a Japanese Ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period active as a painter and printmaker. . He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing Ukiyo-e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes plants and animals. . Hokusai created the monumental Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji as a response to a domestic travel boom in Japan and as part of a personal interest in Mount Fuji. It was this series specifically The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Fine Wind Clear Morning that secured his fame both in Japan and overseas. . Hokusai was best known for his woodblock Ukiyo-e prints but he worked in a variety of mediums including painting and book illustration. Starting as a young child he continued working and improving his style until his death aged 88. . In a long and successful career Hokusai produced over 30000 paintings sketches woodblock prints and images for picture books in total. Innovative in his compositions and exceptional in his drawing technique Hokusai is considered one of the greatest masters in the history of art. . CONDITION: This has been gently removed from the book borders intact. This is woodblock printed in 5 colors there is some of the usual minor 'thumbing' to the lower right corner otherwise the print is a bit dusty as usual with a superb impression and likewise fine registry. .
