Crown 8vo. viii 479 1 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Abraham Lincoln at Springfield index large folding map. Specially bound for Sotheran by Riviere & Son in full black gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt; neatly rebacked preserving the original spine. Preserved with the original chemise and cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped calf spine label: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN - LORD CHARNWOOD - 1916 - FORE-EDGE PAINTING". This is also a very rare specimen with the original chemise and box extant. Provenance: ownership names of R. Joseph Rich Margaret Rich Carr; Joseph Sampsell Carr. Fine. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING BY MS. C. B. CURRIE showing "a view of Harper's Ferry W. Virginia." "This is No. 145 of the Books with Fore-edge Paintings by Miss Currie. . . " Painted ca. 1928/9. See: Weber p. 341 #145 was previously unknown. Currie painted a scene of Harper's Ferry on the Life of John Brown See Weber A8 p. 348. SIGNED IN INK AT FOOT OF LIMITATION PAGE BY C. B. CURRIE. / In all about 172 Currie fore-edge painting were painted. Each is numbered in consecutive order with her known active period of painting fore-edges from c.1909/10-1929/33. All Currie fore-edge paintings are rare. / Miss Caroline Billin Curry aka "Miss. C.B. Currie" 1849-1940 was famous for painting both ivory miniatures and on fore-edge paintings exclusively for Sotheran's and strictly on Riviere bindings. Currie is important as being the only known artist to have signed all her work and numbered the pieces. She was highly touted in her lifetime as an artist who was singled-out for her skill and exquisite artistry that she thereby became the first artist so-named by Sotheran prominently in their catalogue series. Indeed she was a close associate and friend of the shop manager Mr. John Harrison Stonehouse and his wife Currie was named in their will. Even despite her prominence Currie's correct full name was a mystery until very recently. See Weber. This particular specimen was 1 previously unknown to myself 2 preserved the most-frequently missing chemise and 3 a clear provenance to this copy is noted the only one so located by myself. / PROVENANCE: Oddly this is the first known Currie fore-edge painting with provenance that is understood to be after the painting of the Harper's Ferry scene. The importance of that is the relationship of the ownership of a book to the date of the painting or otherwise owning a book before a fore-edge painting is applied to the book. In this case the ownership is surely after the work of Currie. Three persons' names are found in the volume: Joseph Sampsell Carr may have lived in Chicago Illinois. Margaret Rich Carr may have been Margaret Lee Smith Rich Carr 1917-1981 buried in Lubbock Lubbock County Texas. R. Joseph Rich may have been associated with Jefferson Medical College Hospital Philadelphia. REFERENCE: Jeff Weber Annotated Dictionary of Fore-edge Painting & Binders 2010. William Halifax was known for his revival of the fore-edge painting and Etruscan calf bindings the latter which if not evolved by William were successfully adopted by him. He also redeveloped the art of painting under transparent vellum. All three specialities seem to have been carried on both in the Edwards' home town of Halifax where Thomas 1762-1834 another son was in business until 1826 and in London where James and John 1785-c 1791 opened a book store in 1784.

Gladys McKenney Molony 1907-1996. Beautifully and expertly framed both 45.5x 56cm 18"x 22" in polished burled mahogany frames 2 with variant titles supplied via manuscript labels affixed to versos of frames also signed by Shipley. Following a request by the Grand North Atlantic Telegraph Route to have a line sounded from the Faroe Islands to Labrador Sir Leopold McClintock commissioned the paddle wheel steamer H.M.S. Bulldog on June 2 1860 at Portsmouth. To join his crew McClintock invited the accomplished artist Conway Shipley as his guest; Shipley having earlier produced such celebrated views of the South Pacific as published by McLean in 1851. On this voyage Shipley would complete a number of impressively large views with two preserved at the National Maritime Museum London. The present views are significant not only for their sublime Northern landscapes but also for capturing a late phase of the storied Bulldog which would soon be destroyed after a skirmish with Haitian revolutionaries in 1865. 1860 unknown

18206281London: Taylor and Hessey 1820. Fourth edition. A superb example. Twelvemo 6 3/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 162 x 98 mm. 2 blank iv 1-174 2 blank pp. Inscribed by the author on the first blank: "Wiggiston from J. Taylor." Bound ca. 1820 by Taylor and Hessey Booksellers London in full maroon straight-grain morocco. Covers decoratively paneled in gilt and blind spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt in compartments decorative gilt board edges and turn-ins lilac endpapers all edges gilt. With a fine contemporary fore-edge painting by Taylor & Hessey depicting a view of Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire.

English novelist and poet Jane Taylor 1783-1824 perhaps better known for her collaborative authorship with her sister Ann was the voice behind "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Taylor's verses have been here delightfully bound by Taylor and Hessey. The Firm was at its height between 1808-1823 working in both publishing and fine bindings. Their work is usually identifiable from their use of colored Morocco and gilt-stamp name on the foredge of their book boards. Taylor & Hessey also employed a foredge painter whose identity remains lost but whose work predominantly features buildings and landscapes. Of the twenty-four books in American libraries studied by Weber only one exception can be found in the "copy of Mrs. Tighe's Psyche London 1811 on the fore-edge of which 'the Marlborough Gem' is painted" Weber. Here the fore-edge painting depicts the old Premonstratensian Welbeck Abbey in the Dukeries in North Nottinghamshire. The ancient monastery founded by Thomas de Cuckney in 1140 appears in the famous Domesday Book. Taylor and Hessey unknown

Haywood 1908-1995 was an English writer and illustrator of children's books. She was born in England in 1908 but was taken as a child to Chile where her father an engineer worked on the trans-Andean railway. She remained in Chile until she was approximately 15 years old. Her experiences were recounted in an unpublished novel"Childhood in Chile." Miss Haywood was a keen student of science and an amateur naturalist and anthropologist. Many of the books she illustrated for the publisher Hutchinson & Co. London were keenly observed and scrupulously accurate depictions of plants birds and animals. When commissioned to do illustrations for a children's book on dinosaurs her research into the skin colors she subsequently chose for her dinosaur illustrations was cited by the Royal Academy of Sciences. Haywood was also a practitioner of the art of fore-edge painting. She became acquainted with the art form through an uncle who was associated with the Bayntun-Riviere Bindery of Bath. She did several fore-edge and double fore-edge paintings on commission every year from the 1930s to the 1970s for Inman's Books an antiquarian book dealer in New York City. She died in Bournemouth England in 1995.

Abraham Cowley 1618-1667 was an English poet born in the City of London late in 1618. He was one of the leading English poets of the 17th century with 14 printings of his Works published between 1668 and 1721. Around 1663 Cowley obtained permission to retire into the country; and through his friend Lord St Albans he obtained a property near Chertsey where devoting himself to botany and books he lived in comparative solitude until his death.

Alexander Pope 1688-1744 was a poet and satirist of the Augustan period and one of its greatest artistic exponents. Considered the foremost English poet of the early 18th century and a master of the heroic couplet he is best known for satirical and discursive poetry including The Rape of the Lock The Dunciad and An Essay on Criticism and for his translation of Homer. In 1719 he moved to Pope's Villa in Twickenham then a village west of London in Middlesex where he created gardens and an underground grotto. The house and grotto were topics of 18th- and 19th-century poetry and art. London: Printed for F.C. and J. Rivington; W. Nicol and Son..., 1821 unknown

The book was published in 1785 under the title of The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy and was made a part of the examinations at the University of Cambridge the next year. It passed through fifteen editions in the author's lifetime. Paley strenuously supported the abolition of the slave trade and his attack on slavery in the book was instrumental in drawing greater public attention to the practice. In 1789 a speech he gave on the subject in Carlisle was published. Edinburgh: Printed for Adam Black, 1814 unknown
