The TWO FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS by CLARE BOOKSBANK signed. The scene on volume I is possibly a view of King George III and the House of Parliament; on volume II Westminster from the Thames River. The identity of Junius is open to question and debate and may never be finally resolved unless documents are found which establish his identity. On the other hand scholars now generally support the identification with Sir Philip Francis. "The case for Philip Francis first proposed by John Taylor in 1816 has established itself as by far the most probable though categorical proof is still not forthcoming" DNB. The Letters of Junius were the official letters that Junius collected refined and published in 1772. On ethe reverse: Three Satyrs one erect approaching a nude nymph. It was first published by the German classicist Friedrich Karl Forberg in 1824 in Latin and Greek as a commentary to Antonio Beccadelli's 1394-1471 Hermaphroditus commonly referred to as Antonii Panormitae Hermaphroditus an erotic poem sequence of 1425 in renaissance Latin though it was later also published as a separate work." / "Forberg's work was later also translated into English in 1899 and published by Charles Carrington as De figuris Veneris Manual of classical erotology and again in 1907 by Charles Hirsch and into French German and Spanish. The French edition by Alcide Bonneau was titled Manuel d’érotologie classique. One French edition of 1906 was illustrated by Édouard-Henri Avril which concludes with a list of 95 sexual positions. Delicately painted. "In 1831 William Howitt produced a work resulting naturally from his habits of observation and his genuine love of nature. It was a history of the changes in the face of the outside world in the different months of the year and was entitled The Book of the Seasons or the Calendar of Nature 1831." 34620Original bust oil portrait 11-1/2" x 14". The canvas is mounted to a 1/2" thick piece of wood held with small nails along the fore-edges. Framed in a later dark brown recessed molded wood frame behind a burnt orange velvet mat with oval opening measuring approximately 9-1/2" x 12". The painting's surface has some usual age cracks and crackling patterns some very small spots where paint has rubbed off along the line of the oval beneath the matting. Very Good. <br/><br/> We can identify neither the subject nor artist. Her dress is of high quality possibly of European design with an empire waist sleeves with large puffs at the top which sit off the shoulders the top line of the dress being a bit demure and cut above the cleavage and nearly straight across with lace trimmed netting leading up to the neckline and ending in a collar. A brooch is placed at the center where the dress material and netting meet. This type of apparel was popular during the early to mid-1800s. unknown books
