A Christmas Carol is the first issue with title page printed in red and blue dated 1843 in Roman numerals; half title and verso of title page printed in blue; "Stave I" on page 1. The Chimes first edition second issue with the publisher's name below the plate on the vignette title page. The Cricket on the Hearth first edition second issue with 2pp. ads. The Battle of Life first edition Todd's fifth state of the engraved title page with "A Love Story" in a scroll held by a cupid; terminal ads announce the publication in parts of Dombey and Son and the bound volume of Oliver Twist. The Haunted Man first edition first and only issue.All five volumes bound in full polished calf with elaborate gilt seasonal stamping unique to each book. Morocco title labels to ribbed spines gilt dentelles all edges gilt. Sangorski & Sutcliffe stamp in gilt to front turn-in of each volume. Original cloth covers and spines bound in rear of all volumes but the last. Housed in an open-ended slipcase moderately rubbed and toned covered in the same floral gilt-embellished paper used for endpapers. Near Fine with slightly rubbed spines. Light edge toning to interiors occasional thumbing and staining and spots of foxing. No writer is more closely associated with Christmas than Charles Dickens who began with the immortal A Christmas Carol in November 1843. It was published on December 19 and sold so well there were seven editions by the following May. The Chimes followed in December 1844 and three more books appeared in 1845 1846 and 1848 two of the title page dates follow the then-common practice of dating a book published in November or December with the coming year. The enduring appeal of Dickens’ Christmas stories lies in his unmatched ability to combine sentimentality with melancholy or righteous fury a balancing act of light and dark. A Christmas Carol composed as Dickens walked weeping through the dark London streets was intended to draw attention to the plight of the working poor in London. The Chimes attacks the cruelty and hypocrisy of the rich and the protagonist of The Cricket on the Hearth contemplates murder. The Haunted Man the last novella emphasizes the need to remember past sorrows and hardships. Dickens wanted his Christmas books to be pretty – his specifications for the first cut severely into his profits – and it is appropriate that these copies have been given jewel-like bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe one of the most famous fine binderies in the English-speaking world. Two volumes octavo published in 1821 and 1822. 2: title verso blank iii-x 3-656; 2: title verso blank i-ix 1: blank 3-668 pp. Hand-colored engraved frontispiece and pictorial hand-colored title in each volume plus 30 hand-colored aquatint plates in the text. Later full crimson morocco triple-ruled in gilt; spine with raised bands lettered in gilt; gilt turn-ins; all edges gilt. Spine extremities and bands rubbed. Occasional mild toning and smudges. Complete with all 28 text plates called for in the Directions to the Binder along with an additional two plates "Tom and Bob Catching a Charley Napping" Abbey no. 34 and "St. George's Day Presentation at the Levee" Abbey no. 31. A very good or better set in a handsome signed binding by Riviere and Son. First edition later issue of this imitation of Pierce Egan's Life in London 1821. While sometimes attributed to Egan the work was possibly written by John Badcock. "Out of the sixty-five imitations of it which Egan stated that he had reckoned the most important was Real Life in London. which was published in sixpenny numbers in 1821 with excellent illustrations by Heath Alken Dighton Rowlandson and others. Real Life in London is a pleasanter book than its prototype. Some have held that Egan wrote it; but the author had a purer style a cleaner mind and a wider knowledge of London than Egan" The Cambridge History of English and American Literature. "From a bibliographical point of view one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published rivaling Pickwick in the tangle of variant states that exist both in text and plates. The work had a tremendous success probably out-rivaling in popularity its prototype. A difficult feature of the book is that two printers. printed copies textually the same page by page with only minor variations in the settings and this coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being reprinted makes the whole vast output all 'first editions' but with innumerable states and variants that continually overlap one with the other" Abbey. "Originally published in 56 parts on completion the work was issued in boards. Later copies were bound in publisher's cloth. A book full of contrarities and difficulties for the bibliographer there being innumerable variations of the plates. The difficulties are further increased by many copies in modern bindings having been completed or made up of different issues giving combinations that are not true variations" Tooley. Printers: R. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al. Sherwood, Neely, and Jones unknown
