One is 'Pen Pictures' A short description of each of the books in the Bible. The second is Bible Study. The upper portion contains 2 interior scrolls with a window for each of bible pictures. These are in color. The metal key is in the pocket but the scrolls do not work. The entire scroll appears to be intact but will not turn. Per Cohn there should be 195 Cruikshank plates however in 1841 two plates are replace by duplicates of 1841 plates in 1842 one plate is replaced by a duplicate of another 1842 plate and the November 1842 plate is missing. Foldouts from 1852 and 1853 are not hand-colored. Therefore of the expected 195 Cruikshank plates only 194 are present and 191 are as called for. Additionally Cohn calls for the 1835-37 to have been printed by Tilt these have Bogue on the title pages. Overall a worn and slightly imperfect set of the full run of the Comic Almanack suitable for savoring the George Cruikshank plates and text illustrations. . David Bogue etc hardcover

Bound in full olive green cloth boards with paper title labels to spines. Minor wear to edges of boards and spine ends of all volumes. Wear / chipping / browning to title labels. Minor dampstaining to corners of boards of some volumes; although interior pages seem to be free from staining. Some volumes have minor soiling and/or discoloration to covers. Each volume contains illustrations - most in black and white with a few in color. Occasional smudge marks occasional tear to a page in the margin from opening the pages and sporadic spots of foxing - but overall very clean and bright interiors. Rippling to some of the illustrations which are printed on a different paper stock. Signature of previous owner in pen to front free endpapers of most volumes. All bindings remain strong. This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding beveled edges endpapers toned slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. "Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers" English: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. It tells the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus as seen from the perspective of Professor Pierre Aronnax. The original edition had no illustrations; this copy is identical to the first illustrated edition which was published in 1871. 111 illustrations by Riou 24 and Alphonse de Neuville 86 engraved by Hildibrand. Includes 6 chromotypographs and 2 full-page b/w maps. Some age wear on binding with upper spine somewhat rippled and moderate rubbing along edges. Book poorly recased with glue remain along gutters. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists twins born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father they grew up in the care of their uncle Dr E B Shuldham who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age and resulted in a debut aged 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters with nature studies in the Japanese style.
