Robert Louis Stevenson 1850 - 1894 was a Scottish novelist essayist poet and travel writer who travel broadly and settled in Samoa in 1889 where he was prodigiously productive and where he became involved with local politics and culture gathering native stories and infusing some of his writing with these newfound themes. This first edition of the three short stories is accompanied by a set of engaging illustrations by Gordon Browne 1858 - 1932 and William Hatherell 1855-1928 both prolific illustrators who worked with publishers and magazines. The collection is comprised of three short stories " The Beach of Falesá" "The Bottle Imp" and "The Isle of Voices" and contains some of the author's last writing before his death the following year. The book has 27 plates of illustrations with an index including a color map lithographically printed corresponding to the first story. Binding with some light rubbing and bumping to extremities and hinges of the spine. Some light stains to the front and back boards. Spine sunned. Interior with with starting at the gutters of interior covers. Light age toning to the edges of pages. Spine slightly cocked. Binding in good- interior in good condition overall.
