This is an about very good softcover copy with just light cover wear. Text in French and Danish. This small catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen in 1968. The exhibition reviewed the work of the children's book illustrator Lorenz Frolich (1820- 1908). Lorenz Frolich is perhaps best known for his illustrations of Hans Christian Andersen's tales. He also illustrated works by Jules Verne. Essay by Hanne Westergaard. Illustrated in black & white with about a dozen illus. Checklist with 112 works. Bibliography. 7" high X 8" wide, 41 pages. Quite rare in the trade OCLC locates only 2 holdings and despite the British illustrator and authors we could not locate on Worldcat the equivalent UK edition which we find somewhat mystifying. Not the best copy of this book but where will you find another Lippincott hardcover

A beautifully illustrated and hand-colored volume. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al. This is furthermore a LARGE-PAPER SET ON FINE DUTCH LAID PAPER "HOLLANDE" AN ISSUE UNKNOWN TO COHEN-DE RICCI. Cohen-De Ricci cols. 681-2 describes numerous outstanding sets of this work owned by leading 18th and 19th-century bibliophiles and concludes that "Le papier du troisième volume est toujours inférieur a celui des deux premiers"--which is certainly not the case with this set: the paper is excellent and consistent throughout. Cohen-De Ricci also mentions that the plates in volume III are numbered so close to the bottom of the sheets that the numbers are present only when the sheets are entirely uncut as is the case here. 8vos.
