Sous des noms d'emprunt (la clef est dans une notice à la fin de chaque pièce), Lemercier faisait jouer les hommes célèbres de son époque sous la forme de personnages de carton, les pupazzi. Ces dix-huit pièces, dont il est l'auteur, le machiniste, le manipulateur et les voix eurent un grand succès dans les salon de son temps. Bel exemplaire.
