First British edition translated from the Italian of the rare and profusely- illustrated account of the harrowing journey of the Polar Star towards the North Pole. Luigi Amedeo's expedition beat Nansen's record for "Farthest North" though Luigi wasn't with the expedition at its apex being unable to continue after losing two fingers. "With nineteen men the Duke of Abruzzi sailed in the steam brigantine STELLA POLARE June 1899 to Archangel and thence across Barents Sea to Rudolph Island Franz Josef Land to winter in Teplitz Bay and to undertake marches on the ice of the Arctic Basin in attempts to reach the North Pole. The sledge party's farthest was 83°16' N. The ship returned during Aug.-Sept. 1900. The leader's narrative of the expedition includes detailed notes on ice conditions experienced throughout in formation on personnel equipment food and dogs weather polar wildlife and nature; the second section has account by U. Il volume, di pp. (6),698, raccoglie il gruppo completo di tredici operette scritte da Gilbert & Sullivan e così chiamate perchè venivano messe in scena al Savoy Theatre di Londra. La Legatoria Riviere fu una delle più importanti del West End londinese dove operò fra il 1840 e il 1939. Le loro superbe legature erano molto apprezzate dai bibliofili per la qualità e l’attenzione al dettaglio e ricevettero commissioni anche dalla Regina Vittoria e dalla famiglia reale. La dicitura “Riviere & Son” apparve a partire dal 1880 quando Robert Rivière passò la sua attività al genero Percival Calkin. Esemplare in perfetto stato.

In 1899 the author organized an expedition towards the North Pole. In spring he arrived in the Norwegian capital Christiania the present day Oslo with 10 companions. The duke acquired the Jason a steam whaler of 570 tons renamed it Stella Polare "Pole Star" & took the ship on the expedition through the frozen Artic Sea. The members of the expedition sought to reach the North Pole by way of Novaya Zemyla and the Franz Joseph Archipelago. They sailed as far north as possible and then continued their trek by sledge. While they did not reach the North Pole they did reach the highest latitude ever attained by sledge at that time. Originally published in Italian this first edition in English contains 2 folding color maps in the back pocket of the second volume. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. The Polar Star expedition comprising a crew from Italy and Norway aimed to reach the North Polar by sailing as far north as possible and then continuing by sledge. The Pole was not actually attained but the sledge expedition pushed on to a new highest latitude and indeed the Polar Star reached the highest latitude ever achieved by a ship following the coast-line. Three of the crew perished during the sledge journey.Prince Luigi Amedeo Duke of the Abruzzi 1873-1933 was an Italian mountaineer and explorer.
