199045564Western Desert Guides Wembley Downs WA 1990. Softcover. FINE. WEST AUSTRALIANA Aboriginal Exploration -The Canning Stock Route is a track that runs from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia to Wiluna in the mid-west region. With a total distance of around 1850 km 1150 mi it is the longest historic stock route in the world. The stock route was proposed as a way of breaking a monopoly that west Kimberley cattlemen had on the beef trade at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1906 the Government of Western Australia appointed Alfred Canning to survey the route. When the survey party returned to Perth Canning's treatment of Aboriginal guides came under scrutiny leading to a Royal Commission. Canning had been organising Aboriginal hunts to show the explorer where the waterholes were. Despite condemning Canning's methods the Royal Commission after the Lord Mayor of Perth Alexander Forrest had appeared as a witness for Canning exonerated Canning and his men of all charges. The cook who made the complaints was dismissed and Canning was sent back to finish the job.Canning was appointed to lead a construction party and between March 1908 and April 1910 48 wells were completed along the route. Commercial droving began in 1910 but the stock route did not prove popular and was rarely used for the next twenty years. The wells made it difficult for Aboriginal people to access water and in reprisal they vandalised or dismantled many of the wells.A 1928 Royal Commission into the price of beef in Western Australia led to the repair of the wells and the re-opening of the stock route. Around 20 droves took place between 1931 and 1959 when the final droving run was completed. The Canning Stock Route is now a popular but challenging four-wheel drive trek typically taking 10 to 20 days to complete. A few adventurers have traversed the track on foot by bicycle and in two-wheel drivevehicles. There are two small settlements on the track where fuel and other supplies may be obtained; Kunawarritji approximately 1000 km north of Wiluna and Billiluna 173 km south of Halls Creek. The building of the stock route impacted on the cultural and social life of the more than 15 Aboriginal language groups and today the Aboriginal history of the track recorded through oral and artistic traditions is increasingly being recognised. xii 448 p. 8 p. of plates : ill. maps ports. ; 22 cm. Ben conservato, sovraccoperta leggermente strappata.

Cassis 2 Novembre 1933 13.50 x 21.50 cm une feuille Fine and amusing signed manuscript letter from Roger Martin du Gard addressed from Cassis to Alice Rim 3 and a half pages 54 lines in black ink in which he lyrically praises the benefits of the delicious Parisian confections that his correspondent sends him: "". Et quelles sucreries ! Si Dieu pouvait goûter ce que Boissier fabrique avec ses fruits comme il serait honteux des grossiers produits de ses arbres et comme il aurait envie de recommencer sa création."" "". And what confections! If God could taste what Boissier makes with his fruits how ashamed he would be of the crude products of his trees and how he would want to begin his creation anew."" He also praises the tranquility of Cassis without summer visitors: ""Plus d'autos plus de poussière plus de phonos plus de sirènes entre deux vagues. C'est le beau clair et silencieux Cassis authentique où rien ne gêne le travail."" ""No more cars no more dust no more phonographs no more sirens between two waves. This is the beautiful clear and silent authentic Cassis where nothing disturbs work.""and the pleasure of reading ""Voilà"" a magazine in which Carlo Rim collaborates as an illustrator: "". pas un moucheron de Cassis qui ne s'imagine avoir collaboré avec Carlo Rim et son livre sera ici une oeuvre collective nationale."" "". not a single gnat in Cassis who doesn't imagine having collaborated with Carlo Rim and his book will be here a collective national work.""a pleasure shared by all the residents of Cassis: "". je ne sais comment réagissent les puissants de Marseille qu'il égratigne si gaillardement. Mais ici ce ne sont que sourires quand on parle de ""Carlo"". Et j'imagine qu'un jour la population déboulonnera le Calendal de la jetée pour hisser sur le socle un Carlo Rim de granit ou un M. Virgule en ciment armé."" "". I don't know how the powerful people of Marseille react to his spirited scratches. But here there are only smiles when we speak of ""Carlo"". And I imagine that one day the population will unbolt the Calendal from the pier to hoist on the pedestal a Carlo Rim in granite or a M. Virgule in reinforced cement."" In a final gourmand flourish Roger Martin du Gard thanks Alice Rim: ""Veuillez agréer chère madame l'hommage de ma gourmandise reconnaissante."" ""Please accept dear madam the tribute of my grateful gluttony."" Crease mark inherent to envelope folding. S. n. unknown
193480737Cassis: S. n. 1934. Fine. S. n. Cassis 11 février 1934 13.50 x 21.50 cm une feuille Beautiful and amusing signed manuscript letter from Roger Martin du Gard addressed from Cassis to Alice Rim 38 lines in black ink in which he displays all his insatiable appetite for sweets. Fold mark inherent to postal mailing. ""Cassis. February 11th 34 Dear Madam a certain Carlo Comma - whose infernal nerve you know - had the audacity to present himself alone word underlined in Cassis! I must say that he had been conscious of the disappointment he was going to cause and that he arrived with his arms loaded with sumptuous bags of fondant sweets and stuffed dates from the most delicate confectioner If anything could have consoled us for your absence it was indeed this cargo of choice delicacies. The intention was so kind that we did not dare reproach him for his widowhood and that we concealed as best we could the melancholy of our regrets. I am a little ashamed to play this role of an old coquette whom one spoils by stuffing her with pralines; but ""only a little"" for gluttony quickly prevails over feelings of dignity that age has greatly dulled. And the said Carlo promised me in compensation that before the end of carnival - if by then the sky has not fallen on our heads - you would both come to see Cassis again and stay longer than tonight's meteoric appearance. I would almost believe I dreamed it if my room did not smell of pistachio and vanilla and if my papers did not have this imposing confectioner's bag as a paperweight tonight. May at least the Charentes be gentle to you dear madam! I send you there with my faithful respects a thousand wishes for a joyful Fat Tuesday! Roger Martin du Gard"". S. n. unknown
193686630Nice 1936. Fine. Nice 9 Mars 1936 10.50 x 14 cm une feuille recto-verso Autograph letter signed by Roger Martin du Gard 36 lines in black ink on bristol card recto verso written from his furnished lodgings in Nice to the contractor who must manage the damage that occurred in one of the real estate properties he owns. A small ink stain in the left margin of the recto and slightly affecting the word ""sinistrées"". The father of the Thibaults shows himself terrified by the extent of the damage his Parisian real estate has suffered and the inherent expenses to deal with it: ""Your letter caused me some fright. To attack the repairs from underneath if I understand correctly would this mean gutting the ceilings"" Roger Martin du Gard already sees the troubles parade by and his meager savings dwindle: "". because they always entail a cascade of repairs touch-ups adjustments very difficult very expensive due to a host of accessory expenses poorly predictable in advance and which cause various trades to follow one another. One never knows where one is going."" while he already lives frugally his material situation having deteriorated over the years: ""I have little left to count on but my professional earnings which have diminished by three-fifths. . The remainder barely allowing us to live like retired concierges - without staff!!!!"" Letter in which the father of the highly successful saga ""Les Thibault"" shares his impecuniosity with us. unknown
193387920Cassis 1933. Fine. Cassis 27 Juin 1933 13.50 x 21.50 cm trois pages et demi sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter dated and signed by Roger Martin du Gard 58 lines in black ink on a double sheet to the manager of his château du Tertre located in the Perche. While vacationing in Cassis: ""having fled this year with my wife the mists of the Perche"" Roger Martin du Gard has just learned from his wife who returned hastily to their château du Tertre that torrential rains have severely affected their property: ""Disaster in the house. the ceiling is nothing but a sieve it rains as much inside as outside. The terraces are starting to leak again from all sides. everything is affected: paintings wallpaper electrical conduits. What should I do"" The writer urges his correspondent to contact without delay the contractor whom he holds responsible for the defective work that caused this new damage: ""But the fact remains that all this is the contractor's fault and that it is unacceptable. I cannot accept having every two years ceilings and paintings to redo wallpaper to replace."" and against whom he wishes to initiate legal proceedings: ""The waterproofing of the terraces is the essential condition for this type of work and I think I am within my rights in taking action against the contractor. I therefore ask you to do urgently everything you deem necessary certain that you will take your own share of responsibility in this unfortunate affair."" To facilitate the renovation work the irritated father of the Thibaults warns his interlocutor that part of his family will inhabit the damaged château: ""There will therefore always be someone at the end of the line without you needing to route your correspondence through Cassis. I regret it but you must put yourself in my place and understand that I cannot accept this state of affairs."" unknown
