New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English. 544 p., ills. Ottoman Chrysochou (Mid-19th century). This volume presents the thirteen 19th-century fiscal censuses of the district of Hrisofi (Chrysochou) on the north-western side of Cyprus and joins the other two editions containing the censuses of the neighbouring kazas of Kouklia and Paphos released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. It covers the period from 1825 to 1848. The sources, although concerning taxation, trace the demographic and social status of the population in the mid-19th century, providing opportunities for further comparisons with sources of this type, both older and newer. Research fields can therefore be extended to other periods too, and can be directed at exploring issues that explain conversions to Islam, population movements, etc. The fiscal registers we examined reveal the picture that emerges from official administrative data of the Ottoman Empire, a picture that is no different from that described by Western travellers who visited the island, inspired by an interest in its glorious past in antiquity.

Fine English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 350, [1] p. Inventory of Ottoman Turkish documents about waqf preserved in the Oriental Department at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. Pt. 1: Registers. This inventory was compiled owing to the joint efforts of three senior researchers Evgeni Radushev, Svetlana Ivanova, and Rumen Kovachev. They carried our the study for the present inventory by focusing on the registers and series of waqf documents compiled in the form of destes or quires of documents and two specialized kad¿ waqf sicills. The single documents, which Prof. L. Fekete calls ¿loose sheets¿ will be included in a second volume of the Inventory. A detailed annotation is given for each archival unit that is listed. The data contained in the registers informs us especially about the location of the land waqfs in the Balkans and Anatolia, their founders, the types of waqf properties, toponyms and onomastics, the salaries of waqf functionaries, market prices and the enterprises of various waqfs, depicting a detailed picture of the Ottoman Empire and providing information about problems which have not been formerly dealt with. This inventory includes 472 documents only from the funds of the Oriental Department at the National Library in Sofia. They are written primarily in Ottoman, while several archival units are in Arabic. Chronologically they range between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The documents are arranged in a chronological order. This volume contains an index of the personal names of the founders, trustees of waqfs as well as some of the officers. The biographical information is significant for local history as well as the ¿inner¿ history of the empire. This index also contains short lives of military commanders, religious functionaries, sultans¿ wives, eunuchs, etc. The index of geographic places identifies Ottoman and modern names of villages and mahalles. Then come the subject matter index and the glossary of terms. The glossary includes useful information for all researchers of Ottoman history. The present inventory sheds light upon one of the significant subjects of Ottoman social and economic history on the basis of first hand archival documents.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 400 p. Ills. "The eight articles and book chapters included in this volume were written in the course of several decades during which I worked, be it as graduate student, research assistant or professor of history, at the universities of Frankfurt am Main, Gießen, Berlin (Freie Universität) and Bochum. They address questions and issues related to the social, economic and political history of the Balkans under Ottoman rule in general and how they were answered or discussed in the framework of national historiographies in particular. Although some of the arguments propounded in these texts may seem today rather outdated or of little relevance to current discourses, there are others that might be considered as still valid. At any rate, I have been persuaded to publish these texts, not least in order to make them easily accessible to students in the field". Contents: Preface and Acknowledgements. Contents.
