New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English. 544 p., ills. Ottoman Chrysochou (Mid-19th century). This volume presents the thirteen 19th-century fiscal censuses of the district of Hrisofi (Chrysochou) on the north-western side of Cyprus and joins the other two editions containing the censuses of the neighbouring kazas of Kouklia and Paphos released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. It covers the period from 1825 to 1848. The sources, although concerning taxation, trace the demographic and social status of the population in the mid-19th century, providing opportunities for further comparisons with sources of this type, both older and newer. Research fields can therefore be extended to other periods too, and can be directed at exploring issues that explain conversions to Islam, population movements, etc. The fiscal registers we examined reveal the picture that emerges from official administrative data of the Ottoman Empire, a picture that is no different from that described by Western travellers who visited the island, inspired by an interest in its glorious past in antiquity.

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [ii], [2], 342 p., 56 numerous color and b/w plts. Ottoman architecture in Albania, 1385-1912. An extensive study of the numerous Islamic monuments in Albania. The author examined the historical context in which they were built, their architectural characteristics and present state. The analysis is placed in the context of state administration, cultural and social life, and institutional system during the period of Ottoman rule. As such, the book is much more than an architectural study; it also reflects the Ottoman administrative system applied in the provinces, the social functions of the state, and the institutional structure of society. "Architectural historians will appreciate the book most, but students of the Ottoman Caliphate and European art history will also benefit from this sound study." The derbent organization which was established in order to protect caravans and trade-roads and developed from the 'Tutkavul' system in Ilhanlis, is one of the important roads of settlement in the Ottoman State. The derbent facilities, surrounded by walls, are built around intersections of the main roads and in places with central importance; therefore, the inhabitants live in village recorded as the ones responsible for various services are exempted from some or all taxes. Derbents are not only important facilities they also provide security for the region and trade-route but they played a role in enabling settlement in isolated places to Although they were significant in terms of their functions, their organization begins to get out of order in 17th century, the residents have to leave their houses since they are subjected to pressure of bandits. In 18th century the state tried to put this malfunction in order. In spite of all the measures taken the derbents. In couldn't be brought back to its old form and so neglected. The reform movements that began with the administrative reforms "Tanzimat" enable derbent organizations to be removed and in modern sense security organization is founded; in this framework inns and derbents in some certain points are transformed into gendarme post.

Devsirme also known as the blood tax or tribute in blood, was chiefly the annual practice by which the Ottoman Empire sent military to abduct boys, sons of their Christian subjects in the villages of the Balkans and Anatolia. They were then converted to Islam with the primary objective of selecting and training the ablest children for the military or civil service of the Empire, notably into the Janissaries. Started by Murad I as a means to counteract the growing power of the Turkish nobility, the practice itself violated Islamic law. Yet by 1648, the practice was slowly drawing to an end. An attempt to re-institute it in 1703 was resisted by its Ottoman members who coveted its military and civilian posts. Finally in the early part of Ahmet III's reign, the practice of devsirme was abolished. OTTOMANIA Ottoman Empire Ottoman state system Rumelia Balkans.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 240 p. Nations and identities. The case of Greeks and Turks. Ten essays define and explain how nationalism, identities and ethnic conflicts Hercules Millas are created and function. The Greeks, the Turks and their historiographies, textbooks and literary texts are studied as a case to show how ethnic images, perceptions and prejudices of the Other are formed and operate. Based on his personal interethnic lifelong experience, the author proposes a way to approach these issues in education, too. All the essays in this study make use of the comparative approach to demonstrate how national identities are associated with an imagined Other. The identity of the Self and national identity as well as the related discourse can become meaningful and easy to understand when judged as counteractions of the involved groups. The whole endeavor is an effort to approach nationalism as a manifestation that needs to be examined with a variety of academic disciplines. Imagologists are used to dealing with the distinction between auto image and hetero-image. What Millas's research has highlighted is something which, to my knowledge, has not yet been thematized in image studies, but which is of great importance: the collapse between auto-image and hetero-image, our image of the other's image. I think something as important as this "image of an image" deserves its own name, so that it can be thematized without circumlocutions. The term "meta-image" seems to present itself. Prof. Dr. J. Th. Leerssen, University of Amsterdam.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 144 p. " It all happened in 1876, during "the Year of the Three Sultans" when a Bulgarian girl named Stephana made a journey to Salonika to convert to Islam and was subsequently abducted by a group of Christians. This event stoked tensions, and stirred outrage within the Muslim community. Public protests ensued, culminating in the murder of the French and German consuls by a Muslim mob on May 6, 1876. This 'Salonika Incident' would consequently trigger a wave of hysteria throughout the West and among the Christian populations of the Ottoman Empire. There was fear of an 'impending massacre of the Christians' which would never take place. A diplomatic war of words between the Sublime Porte and the Great Powers, which held the former accountable for this double crime, directly followed the incident. Through a detailed and meticulous account of this neglected episode of Ottoman-Balkan history, this book aims to cast light on an often distorted and highly misunderstood event which is a manifestation of Western attitudes toward the Ottoman Empire during the climactic years of the Eastern Question.".
