L’opera vede esemplari con un numero di stampe diverso che vanno da 335 a 428. Legature coeve in mezza pelle con titolo e fregi in oro al dorso e piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata coeva. Gli ultimi due volume, usciti nel 1819 che assieme costituiscono il tomo VI, presentano una legatura in mezza pelle scura. Qualche strofinatura, qualche leggero difetto ma nel complesso in buone condizioni di conservazione. All’interno, un alone al margine basso delle ultime 11 carte che lede la consistenza della carta nelle ultime sei pagine, abilmente restaurate ma che nelle ultime due carte, contenenti le “Table des matiers et des gravures” ha provocato la perdita di alcune parole. 6 carte con uno lieve strappo ma senza perdita di carte e a parte il difetto alla fine del primo volum e, esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Le bellissime tavole sono stampate su carta di ottima qualità. L'autore delle incisioni (Paris 1673- Amsterdam 1733) , di scuola francese, dopo il suo trasferimento in Olanda, ne assimilò il gusto e lo spirito, diventando uno dei massimi rappresentanti dell'incisione olandese dell'epoca (v. Si tratta della prima traduzione inglese del testo Tibetano Buddista “Bardo Thodol”, realizzata dallo scrittore americano Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (1878-1965), antropologo e pioniere nello studio del buddismo tibetano e nella sua trasmissione al mondo occidentale. Il titolo fu inventato da Wentz per la similarità con l’antico “Libro dei morti” egiziano, e come il testo egizio anche questo tibetano diventò un importante classico della spiritualità universale. Solo antica firma di apparten. ms. al frontespizio, altrimenti esemplare molto ben conservato.

I riferimenti alle tavole e alle carte citati nei due frontespizi sono fuorvianti: nel primo volume e' citato: "Con 403 incisioni da fotografie e da acquerelli e disegni dell'autore, e con 10 carte" mentre nel secondo volume: "Con 397 incisioni in nero, due panorami, otto tavole a colori, e 10 carte). Nella realtà sono presenti complessivamente 381 illustrazioni in nero in tavole fuori testo, la numerazione è continua per entrambi i volumi, da 1 a 194 nel primo e da 195 a 378 nel secondo (di cui una è un grande panorama ripiegato) e tre tavole non numerate relative alle due antiporte ed al ritratto di Hedin, nove tavole a colori (tre nel primo volume e sei nel secondo, di cui una è un grande panorama ripiegato), tre grandi carte a colori ripiegate fuori testo (una nel primo e due nel secondo volume). Non sono in alcun modo presenti le dieci tavole citate nel primo volume ed altre dieci citate nel secondo volume ed il numero complessivo delle illustrazioni in nero è quindi di 381 (378 + 3) e non 403 + 397.

"Prima edizione". “Giotto Dainelli (1878-1968), esploratore, geologo, paleontologo e geografo di altissimo livello, dalla personalità vivacissima.. Nel 1913-14 partecipò alla spedizione De Filippi al Karakorum, la più importante missione esplorativa italiana in Asia del nostro secolo. Essa si proponeva un duplice scopo: esplorare il grande ghiacciaio Rimu, nel Karakorum orientale, e raccogliere il maggior numero possibile di informazioni geofisiche, geologiche, metereologiche e, in via subordinata, anche naturalistiche, su quella regione. Entrambi gli scopi furono brillantemente raggiunti. Al D. fu lasciata libertà di movimento: con l'amico Marinelli, che l'aveva raggiunto, poté compiere escursioni al di fuori dell'itinerario principale della spedizione, esplorando un'area assai più ampia e giungendo, sulla via del ritorno, fino al Tien Shan”.
