Kavallerieregiment, bezog danach 1864 die Universität Bonn. 1866 siedelte er nach Paris über, wo er 1873 Professor an der orientalischen Akademie wurde. Im Auftrag der Regierung machte U. 1876-82 drei Forschungsreisen durch Zentralasien. - Die Bedeutung U.s liegt besonders in seinen archäologischen Untersuchungen wie anthropologischen, ethnologischen und linguistischen Studien... (Embacher). Das vorliegende Werk beschreibt eine 1881-82 durchgeführte Forschungsreise in den westlichen Teil des Himalaja bis zu den Indusquellen. Die Abbildungen zeigen v.a.
