Title page contains the Plantin device. Bound in a fine unsigned modern full calf binding with blind stamped and gilt boards and an extra-gilt spine. Interior pages are clean and fresh with an occasional spot. Edges are trimmed a bit closely on some leaves. A very attractive copy. The engravings which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. Justus Lipsius 1547-1606 was a Belgian antiquarian who specialized in the study of ancient and classical history. His work "De cruce libri tres" first printed in 1583 is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. Text printed italic font with sectional decorative initials. Interior pages are generally clean. A miniscule marginal tear is neatly sealed on the title page. A small pair of initials are lightly written in an old hand on the verso of the title. Bound in modern full calf with panels in blind after an early period style. Jean Picards "De Prisca Celtopaedia" discusses the development of language arts and science in ancient Gaul. The author uses place names ancient sources and epigraphic evidence to argue that the Greek language had originated in Gaul and that the Gallic Druids and Bards were developing philosophy science and poetry long before other cultures. Picard claims that the Greek language was first brought to Greece by the Gauls as they travelled through those lands on the way to found new settlements in Asia Minor i.e. Galatia paraphrased from Le Long Bib. Two vols bound in one: title page to both vols both with engraved vignettes and both dated 1594; several engraved headpieces; pp. viii 1-342; ii 343 - 628 26 Blasii Monluci Franciae Mareschalli Tumulus. 17th c. binding of full calf with 5 raised bands to the boards with gilt decroation between and burgundy title label; marbled end papers tihe front end paper with the engraved bookplate of the Earl of Roden all edges tinted red. Binding good and strong with some general wear and rubbing leather chipped to the head/tail of the spine and rubbed through to the boards to the bottom edges partially to the front fore-edge and the corners joints with partial cracks at the head/tail but the binding remains firm and the boards strongly attached. Contents generally very good clean and complete with a few small faults: the title page to vol. I a little worn and marked with the lower corner tip missing but not affecting any lettering a few pages very lightly stained; pp. 18-32 with a tear/chip at the base of the gutter with slight loss of a few letters; but lost letters replaced in contemporary autograph this may have been a binding fault as these pages are not quite straight with a few marginal notes slightly shaved. Generally margins are very good with marginal notes present slight worming to the head of pages 590-620 slightly affecting running title only top corners/top foreedge of pages 113-116 singed slightly affecting a couple of marginal notes. A very good copy of this very early reprint: the first edition was published 2 years earlier and was soon coined the "soldiers' bible". For extra information please do not hesitate to contact us. Première édition d'Henri Estienne de la traduction en latin de l'humaniste italien Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457), qui a beaucoup souffert a cause de ses idees conciliantes envers l'esprit classique avant l' arrivee du pape Nicholas V. (Erasme, dans son De ratione studii pour la grammaire latine, "il n'y pas meilleur guide que L. Valla"). L'apologie pour Herodote valut a H. Estienne les attaques de l'eglise, de Sorbonne et du Palais car c'etait une critique indirecte contre les moeurs de son epoque. Grandes marges avec de critiques, quelqu'unes manuscrites (anciennes) et aussi a la 1e feuille blanche. Page de titre gravee, restauree, mouillure claire a qq pages du milieu.
