In the middle printers woodcut device.Ff (4) + Ff 54. Colophon on LIIII (54 - many misfoliations - signatures correct). On F (4) Arms of France in a large woodcut. Some annotations in a contemporary hand. - Both work with many large initials in woodcut. Lower margins throughout browned and with some repairs, some leaves in the middle having some heavy wormtracts in lower margins. Some corners at end restored. In the second work a wormtract in outer margins, but decreasing toward end. Upper right corners with a faint dampstain.

Lovely well preserved half calf from ab. 1700 with leather title-label to spine. Marbled paper over boards. Dampstaining throughout, af varying degree, to the bottom of the leaves. A bit of wear, and one leaf with a small repaired hole. With 29 large woodcuts in the text, cut but L. Benedict. Title-page printed in red and black. 41 ff. Later tree calf worn front hinge split rear starting front endpaper torn at the top corner as is the title with an old repair and manuscript UZIA in the title to replace the missing letters. A few paper repairs in the margins touching a few letters a few short tears with no real loss scattered pencil marks and a few minor marginal marks in an old hand. One group of pages trimmed a little close with loss of some text to the table on leaf 53 of the genealogy of the Kings of Austria. Generally minor scatterd foxing browning and staining - mostly quite clean. Magnificently illustrated throughout with armorial devices - first and only edition of an outstanding work on the Andalusian aristocracy. 10 348 ff. Argote de Molina great humanist and librarian also edited the first Spanish book on hunting 1582 and a history of the embassy sent by Henry III of Castille in 1403--1406 to the Court of Tamerlaine at Samarkand 1582. Bound later (around 1800) in hcalf. Spine divided in 6 compartments, all richly blindtooled and in the middle of each a small gilt rosette. A crack to joint (2 cm.) at upper compartment. Light wear along edges. Marbled endpapers. Red edges. (22),286 leaves. With engraved map (a reproduction in smaller size of ""Carta Marina"") - the map in FACSIMILE, and more than 450 fine woodcut illustrations in the text, the the greatest part measuring 59 x 93 mm, a few half-page and some 1/3-page. Woodcut device on title-page and on colophon-leaf. Title-page mounted and with small closed tears. Title-page slightly soiled. A faint dampstain to upper corners on Index-leaves (""Tavola""), which appears again in more weakened form towards end. A faint dampspot in upper inner margin throughout. The last few leaves with a bit of browning, 2 small holes in last leaf with loss of a few letters.
1522032982Coloniae: Heronem Alopeciu 1522 An extremely scarce early edition published in September 1522 - a month after the authorised Basel edition - by Hero Alopecius in Cologne. We have only been able to find one reference to it University of Toronto. Erasmus arranged publication of the Basel edition in August 1522 in response to the appearance of an unauthorised version in Cambridge in 1521. He had originally worked on the content in 1509-1511 and this work developed from his earlier writing and lectures became a popular and important text book on the writing of letters. It was much reprinted. This copy is newly rebound in full calf with panelled design to boards and gilt titles to spine. The page edges are red although this may not be contemporary. New endpapers. Contents with 2 initial blanks - the first with ink notation on the edition - this looks likely to be 1800's in date and the paper does not look contemporary. Title with elaborate design including 2 cherubs holding a shield with 3 crowns with contemporary latin note at the top; letter from Erasmus to Nicolao Beraldo pp 2-4; text with beautiful decorative initial capitals pp 5-414 Finis. No final blanks. There is some scholarly annotation in latin and gentle underlining - this could be contemporary. There are a number of mispaginations but the ties work in all cases: 47-74-75-50; 51-78-79-54; 55-82-83-58; 59-98-87-62-63-90-65; 170-117-172; 177-168-179; 192-191-192-193. There are a number of professional paper repairs: to the side of the title page and page 13/14; from p 357 onwards where the top corner tips had been burnt out - this begins with the just the tip but towards the end of the work includes some page numbers and just clips a couple of margin notes - the final 2 leaves have repair to sides. These corners do not have the red edges. Towards the end of the work there are a few pages with some grubbiness at the bottom corners. Otherwise the work is very clean with high quality paper. Debry Printed His Voyage To Virginia In 1590 As Part I Of His Works But Burden Mapping Of North America Provides No Record That A 1592 Printing Exists. This Map Has No Center Fold But Contemporary Engravings Exist Of The Offices Of The Great 17Th Century Cartographic Publishers With Row Upon Row Of Flat Drawers For Storage Of Single Maps; It Would Be Unreasonable To Believe That None Of These Unbound Maps Survived. This Appears To Be One Of Them Although The Consensus Of Modern Dealers Is That No Unfolded Large Map First Published In A Book Can Exist. Although We Have Been Unable To Locate A 1592 German Edition Of Debry We Believe This Is A Map As Issued In The 1592 German Edition Of De Bry Which Was First Published In 1591 And Subsequently Reprinted In 1592 And 1594 And In The Seventeenth Century. Small Cartouche At Lower Left Monogram With Text "Caesavece Matis. Privilegio Mdxcii" In The Plate Added After Original 1591 Printing. This Is An Unfolded Sheet Which Was Never Bound In A Book; A Strong Impression Without Damage And With Old Light Partial Coloring. Once Quite Aged Then Professionally Cleaned De-Acidified And Mounted Loosely With Archival Materials By A Museum-Experienced Conservator In About 2000. Scarce.
