1604045016Ambrosium & Hieronymum Drouart 1604. Second Edition. Hardcover Full Leather. Very Good Condition. 5 volumes bound in 9 in contemporary calf. Worn at the edges and corners spines a little dry but intact and attractive overall. Volume 1 with a single title page some copies were apparently bound with a second title page noting Estienne the publisher of the Folio edition. Old bookplates inside covers ownership marks and stamps to titles and first pages occasionally trimmed a little close on the top edge just touching the running title scattered minor pencil marks light dampstain to the corners of a section of vol vii but otherwise clean and a very good set overall. This is the second edition of Thou's history published 1604-1608 and the first octavo edition. It was published just after the Folio edition a few months after for the first volumes and almost simultaneously thereafter. The first two octavo volumes corresponding to the first folio volume and printed in 1604 identified here as Pars I and Partis Primae Tomus II is bound in four volumes as is the second volume published in two octavo volumes in 1606 and corresponding to the Folio volume also published in 1606. They are identified as Tomus Secundi Pars Prima and Tomi Secundi Pars altera. The final volume identified as Libri VI is bound in one and published in 1608 the Folio edition was published in 1607-8. Because Thou was editing and changing his systems of identification as he published the books the naming system is a little odd - this final volume follows the third and fourth octavo volumes and not the first two in how it is numbered. 1005pp index; 1013 index; 958 index; 886 index; 501 privilege index. Thou's history is one of the great monuments of Renaissance history and in its scientific factual take on events was much more a work of the enlightenment than the counter-reformation. As a result and despite some minor changes from the first edition all of the later books dealing with the wars of religion and other topics ended up on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. Thomas Barlow 1607-1691 was an English academic and clergyman who became Provost of The Queen's College Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising the Rising of the North had just failed. Pius then issued a bull Regnans in Excelsis dated April 27 1570 that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response Elizabeth who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private now actively started persecuting them. A flawed but essentially complete copy of the first edition the only edition printed in Solís's lifetime. Brunet 28230 Cioranescu 41783 First edition.<br /><br />Charles Le Gobien was a French Jesuit writer founder of the Lettres édifiantes et curieuses a collection of reports from Jesuit missionaries in China. It is a major source of information for the history of Catholic missions and life in China in those times. Le Gobien was born at Saint-Malo Brittany. He entered the Society of Jesus on 25 November 1671. As professor of philosophy and especially while procurator of the Franco-Chinese mission he sought in a series of papers to awaken interest in the work of Christianizing Eastern Asia. In 1697 appeared at Paris his Lettres sur les progréz de la religion à la Chine. Apropos of Chinese Rites controversy he published among other things Histoire de l'édit de l'empereur de la Chine en faveur de la religion chrétienne avec un éclaircissement sur les honneurs que les Chinois rendent à Confucius et aux morts Paris 1698; and in the year 1700: Lettre à un Docteur de la Faculté de Paris sur les propositions déférées en Sorbonne par M. Prioux. Under the same date there appeared in Paris the Histoire des Isles Mariannes nouvellement converties à la religion chrétienne. The second part translated into Spanish by J. Delgado is found in the latter's Historia General de Filipinas Manila 1892. In 1702 Père Le Gobien published Lettres de quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus écrites de la Chine et des Indes Orientales; this was the beginning of the collection soon to become celebrated under the title of Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangéres par quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus. The first eight series were by Le Gobien the latter ones by Fathers Du Halde Patouillet Geoffroy and Maréchal. The collection was printed in thirty-six volumes duodecimo Paris 1703–76 and reissued in 1780-81 by Fathers Yves de Querbeux and Brotier in twenty-six volumes duodecimo omitting the prefaces. New editions appeared in 1819 1829–32 and 1838-43. One abridgment in four volumes octavo was entitled Panthéon Littéraire by L. Aimé Martin 1834–43. A partial English translation came out in London in 1714. The publication incited the Austrian Jesuit Stöcklein to undertake his Neuer Welt Bott about 1720 at first considered merely a translation but soon an independent and particularly valuable collection five volumes folio in forty parts substantially completing the Lettres Edifiantes.<br /><br />This is a history of the Christian missions in the Marianas or Ladrones Islands in the north-western Pacific the principal island of which is Guam. Reprinted in the text are several letters from early missionaries Medina Clain Sanvitores &c. The Jesuit mission was established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien never visited the Mariana islands but based his account chiefly on the relations and letters of missionaries sent to him from Rome Spain the Netherlands etc. Includes a letter by P. First published in French the prior year which was published without the plates.<br /><br />François Pidou de Saint Olon was a French diplomat under Louis XIV. In 1682 he was nominated as the first French resident envoy to the Republic of Genoa following the Bombardment of Genoa. He was then sent as an envoy to Madrid. In 1689 François Pidou was appointed ambassador to the court of Sultan Moulay Ismail for the signing of a commercial treaty and to release prisoners now slaves of Barbary corsairs of Salé for 233 including 29 bedridden Moroccan prisoners held by the French. His mission was not successful however he continued to stay more than three weeks more in Morocco. The book gains particular interest through its author's position as ambassador giving him access not always voluntary to areas of Moroccan society previously unrecorded by travelers. There are detailed descriptions of Moroccan dress and the book is beautifully illustrated with eight engraved plates of Moroccan men and women in traditional costume.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />With the fine copper engraved frontispiece of the overall state of Morocco which is quite rare and is often found missing in most copies. For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever. Engraved headpiece and initial decoration on dedication leaf signed by Schoonebeck followed by full-page engraved leaf honoring Chevalier with depictions of Atlas Aristotle and other muses. Full contemporary vellum blind-stamped with central lozenge design; very slight foxing or staining engravings fresh; covers slightly bowed. Initialled bookplate P.M.G to front pastedown. First Edition in French of this biography of William III of England extensively illustrated to show important events in the monarchs life. This work was privately printed for Nicolas Chevalier who was a hobbyist and coin collector. A large proportion of Dutch print-making at the end of the 17th century focused on William III. An almost categorical personality cult surrounded the stadtholder-king. Among the print-makers Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. He is best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. De Hooghes 12 etchings of triumphal arches for this work are adaptations of plates in the works by Bidloo and Tronchin de Breuil published in 1691 and 1692. Adriaen Schoonebeek c. 1657- 1705 is often mentioned because of his appearance as witness for the prosecution in a court case against de Hooghe that formed the climax of a slanderous exchange of pamphets between Orangists and members of the Amsterdam faction in 1690. These animosities did not prevent re- employment of both engravers in executing plates for this Nicolas Chevaliers 1692 illustrated volume on numismatics and the life of King William. Rare. Quite clean internally - in two parts a third was published in 1689. 14 70 8 154pp<br/><br/>The first and second parts of Ware's extensive and pernicious forgeries of church history intended to stir up anti-Catholic anti-Irish and anti-Jesuit sentiment. They played a large role in the absurd stories surrounding the Popish Plot and many of Ware's creations continued to pollute reformation history into the 19th 20th and even 21st centuries. Ware was the son of a prominent historian and used his father John's name to legitimize the documents that he "found" - one of the most long lived forgeries was a Cranmer letter at the beginning of part two which entered into Cranmer's works and was preserved for centuries through misattributions by historians such as John Strype and wishful thinking.
