6313About 40 finely drawn & colored illus. 16 folding leaves. 8vo 264 x 180 mm. orig. wrappers new stitching. Japan: late Edo. This is an extremely finely executed album of illustrated natural history specimens collected from throughout Japan; the nearly 40 illustrations are very well drawn and painted many with mica or three-dimensional techniques used in traditional Japanese painting to make the drawings more realistic. The specimens include botanical mineral and animal examples. The first leaf of the album contains the title and an index of the 22 specimens. These include: a special kind of ivy from Nikko with Chinese names and where found a "four-eyes" jellyfish from Shizuoka a seahorse from Wakayama a cowskin from China a "floating rock" from Izu a "crab rock" and camphor wood from Ehime fossils "pepper rock" from Yamagata copper three images showing the stages of refining the ore from Iwate seaweed from Niigata white bats from Ibaraki the tree producing white lacquer from Kagoshima leeches from Musashino almonds from Nagano etc. There is some repaired worming which occasionally touches images but we do not find it offensive. This manuscript is very beautiful. unknown books
1894WRCAM28514Albany 1894. Thirty volumes described below. Original cloth gilt-stamped in the earlier volumes in the series several volumes rebacked with original backstrips laid down. Several volumes with minor nicks or tears in cloth but overall a very good set of a work seldom found in decent condition. A complete set of one of the great monuments of American science and natural history illustration of the 19th century. It is virtually impossible to assemble all of the volumes in this set as they were issued across more than half a century and are generally found in poor condition because the bindings were not adequate for the weight of the heavy text blocks. Many of the volumes were issued in two states with the plates either colored or uncolored. In this set all possible plates some 539 are colored.

The New York Natural History and Geological Survey was established by the state legislature in 1836 under the direction of James Ellsworth DeKay. By far the most ambitious scientific project undertaken in the United States up to that time it was designed to be issued in six sections: Zoology Botany Mineralogy Geology Agriculture and Paleontology. After six years of preparation volumes began to appear in 1842. The first four parts a total of twelve volumes were issued in 1842-44 and the five volumes of the Agriculture section between 1846 and 1854. The final section Paleontology began publication in 1846 but under its editor James Hall it took on a life of its own. Hall managed to turn it into a long career in his position as state paleontologist ultimately issuing thirteen volumes where only one had been planned originally. Without Hall's genius as a lobbyist for additional state funds the entire project would have been wrapped up in the 1850s. Instead he was still in office at age eighty-three when the final volumes were published.

NATURAL HISTORY OF NEW YORK is notable for its vast array of color plates and in later volumes its use of other innovative forms of natural history illustration. In all it contains several thousand plates colored and uncolored making it a project on the same scale as the Pacific Railroad Survey. The present set contains 539 handcolored lithographs. The set is much less well known because far fewer volumes were produced than the U.S. government publications but it clearly was the model on which the great U.S. surveys of the 1850s were based. Some sections of the set are particularly desirable and more difficult to obtain while others were produced in very small editions. An essential work for any collection of early American science or American illustration especially color plates. A synopsis of the set with notes on illustration and rarity is given below. A detailed collation of the set is given in Meisel.

Part I. ZOOLOGY OF NEW YORK: OR THE NEW YORK FAUNA; COMPRISING DETAILED NOTICES OF ALL THE ANIMALS HITHERTO OBSERVED WITHIN THE STATE OF NEW YORK. This series was edited by James Ellsworth DeKay.

Vol. I. Mammalia. Albany. 1842. Thirty-three plates. These plates are usually found uncolored as here. A colored issue does exist but is extremely rare.

Vol. II. Birds. Albany. 1842. 141 handcolored plates.

Vol. III. Reptiles and Amphibians. Albany. 1842. 102 plates. These plates are usually found uncolored as here. The extremely rare colored issue of this volume is probably the hardest segment or issue to find of the NATURAL HISTORY.

Vol. IV. Reptiles and Amphibians. Albany. 1842. The text volume for the preceding.

Vol. V. Mollusca and Crustacea. Albany. 1844. Fifty-three handcolored plates.

Part II. Not surprisingly the beautiful colored lithographs of flowers have made this one of the most sought after sections of the NATURAL HISTORY.

Part III. 189544165New York December 8th 1895. Autograph letter signed on recto and verso of single cream laid sheet 22x14.5cm.; approx. 85 words; dated 26 West 61st N.Y. Dec 8th and simply addressed to "Parker" presumably Stanton's friend and fellow-suffragist Parker Pillsbury 1809-1898 who with Stanton had co-edited the women's rights newsletter "The Revolution" twenty years earlier. Faint mail folds small unobtrusive archival paper remnants to two corners from having been previously mounted else Near Fine and still quite fresh. Brief contemporary 1897 pencil note at bottom edge "Mrs. Stanton - born Nov. 12 1815 Now past 82 - C.E.R." though based on contents we would place this letter as having been written around 1895. Brief but significant missive addressed to Parker Pillsbury the American minister and women's suffrage advocate regarding a copy of Stanton's "Woman's Bible" she had just sent him. "I wonder if I could interest them a "Mrs. White" and one other sufficiently in the Woman's Bible to sell ten or twenty copies in there sic respective woman's clubs It is published at my expense hence I am trying to push its circulation." The controversial "Woman's Bible" a series of commentaries pertaining to the portions of the Bible relating to women was published in two parts in 1895 and 1898 and composed almost entirely by Stanton alone her committee of Bible revisors finding the project too controversial and harmful to the cause of women's suffrage. Clearly at the time of writing this letter the book was still meeting with resistance thus our placing the date at around 1895 Stanton turning to Pillsbury as a potential source of influential and wealthy patrons she inquires "Is Mrs. White still living & working Is that rich woman that Mr. illegible used to visit in Maine living". But by 1897 the book had become a best seller though many of the members of the women's suffrage movement would continue to distance themselves from it. This letter quite significant as a testimony to the aging Stanton organizer of the historical 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and her continuing indefatigable efforts and initial lack of support in getting this work circulated. 19512436Hollinwood/Lancs: Ferranti Ltd 1951. First edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE MANUAL FOR ONE OF THE FIRST VIDEO GAMES. VERY POSSIBLY THE FIRST COMPUTER GAME MANUAL. Although they were "keen to be involved" in the 1951 Festival of Britain electrical engineering firm and computing pioneer Ferranti was still without an exhibit by late 1950. John Bennet an employee of the firm stepped up and suggested the construction of a machine that could play Nim a matchstick game in which players compete to force a final move.

The Nimrod is considered to be the first or second computer game ever constructed depending on how one defines the term and is certainly the first to be constructed and played outside of North America. It was inspired by the Nimatron an "electro-mechanical machine exhibited at the 1940 World's Fair in New York City" that also played Nim Donovan which isn't typically considered a computer and followed only Toronto's Bertie the Brain built in 1950 which played tic-tac-toe.

The manual which includes a technical description of the computer appears to be the first of its kind as we can locate no records of any user manuals or pamphlets for the Nimatron or Bertie the Brain both of which were also presented and played at public festivals.

The game was tremendously well received both at Festival of Britain and at the Berlin Industrial Show in the same year. It is reported that it drew politicians and academics notably including Alan Turing who is rumored to have been one of the few to beat it!

Sources: Donovan T. 2010. Replay: The history of video games. 1604045016Ambrosium & Hieronymum Drouart 1604. Second Edition. Hardcover Full Leather. Very Good Condition. 5 volumes bound in 9 in contemporary calf. Worn at the edges and corners spines a little dry but intact and attractive overall. Volume 1 with a single title page some copies were apparently bound with a second title page noting Estienne the publisher of the Folio edition. Old bookplates inside covers ownership marks and stamps to titles and first pages occasionally trimmed a little close on the top edge just touching the running title scattered minor pencil marks light dampstain to the corners of a section of vol vii but otherwise clean and a very good set overall. This is the second edition of Thou's history published 1604-1608 and the first octavo edition. It was published just after the Folio edition a few months after for the first volumes and almost simultaneously thereafter. The first two octavo volumes corresponding to the first folio volume and printed in 1604 identified here as Pars I and Partis Primae Tomus II is bound in four volumes as is the second volume published in two octavo volumes in 1606 and corresponding to the Folio volume also published in 1606. They are identified as Tomus Secundi Pars Prima and Tomi Secundi Pars altera. The final volume identified as Libri VI is bound in one and published in 1608 the Folio edition was published in 1607-8. Because Thou was editing and changing his systems of identification as he published the books the naming system is a little odd - this final volume follows the third and fourth octavo volumes and not the first two in how it is numbered. 1005pp index; 1013 index; 958 index; 886 index; 501 privilege index. Kinser pages 10-20. Graesse VII 147. As a result and despite some minor changes from the first edition all of the later books dealing with the wars of religion and other topics ended up on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. 1734D4425Paris: Par La Compagnie des Libraires 1734. Hardcover. Very Good. Three volumes comprising Vol. III parts I to III of Memoires de lAcadémie Royale des Sciences depuis 1666 jusquà 1699. Paris: Par La Compagnie des Libraires 1733-1734. Part I: 231pp.; Part II: 294pp.; Part III: 215pp. 97 engraved folding plates depicting animals and skeletal diagrams. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Claude Perrault in first volume. Contemporary French calf spines gilt edges red; some occasional browning; repairs to joints some rubbing. Unidentified armorial bookplate to front pastedown beneath monogrammed bookplate D.P. with chipmunk and two mice. A later reduced format edition of Perraults Memoires of 1671-1676 Perraults study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Prior to 1670 most descriptions of animals paid little attention to their internal structure and there were very few images in natural history encyclopedias that depicted skeletons or muscles. That changed with the establishment of the Académie des Sciences in Paris in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert with the approval of King Louis XIV. The Academy functioned with neither statutes nor regulations until 1699. At that time the Academy used the term mathématique to encompass the fields that are now called astronomy mathematics and physics and the term physique to encompass the fields that are now called anatomy botany zoology and chemistry. In January 1699 Louis reorganized the Academy giving it first regulations. The effect was to give the King more control over their activities in exchange for becoming an official institution under his protection with the new name Académie Royale des Sciences. One of the original academicians the physician Claude Perrault organized regular sessions at which participants could dissect deceased animals from Louis XIVs royal menagerie and record all they observed. Lions chameleons bears gazelles wolves ostriches crocodiles monkeys eagles tigers porcupines and salamanders among some were all laid open by the academics scalpels. These superb folding plates record in great detail the pioneering work at the Academy. These three volumes in three parts focus on the transformative and foundational years of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and Claude Perraults efforts which had made comparative anatomy a vital tool for the classifying naturalist.

Par La Compagnie des Libraires hardcover books

1681H0011a2-a6b-b7c-c7d-2315 pages. Small square octavo 7 ¾" x 6 ¼" bound in full leather. Second edition. Thomas Barlow 1607-1691 was an English academic and clergyman who became Provost of The Queen's College Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising the Rising of the North had just failed. Pius then issued a bull Regnans in Excelsis dated April 27 1570 that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response Elizabeth who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private now actively started persecuting them. Palau 94965 Sabin 25926 Nissen ZBI 1433 Hill p117 First English edition.

Frézier was educated in Paris and served as lieutenant of infantry from 1702 til 1707 when he entered the engineer corps. In 1712 the government sent him to examine the condition of the Spanish colonies in America. After visiting the principal points in Peru Chili and Brazil he returned to Marseilles. He pointed out several mistakes in the "Relation" of Father Feuille and this led to a bitter controversy between the two travelers. Frézier introduced the large Chili strawberry into France. First published in France in 1714. The first edition into English is preferable to the French original "because it contains Halley's. postscript which corrects certain geographical errors made by Frézier" Hill. "The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru describing the chief towns and cities. Frézier a man of observation brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants.

Condition:

Rebacked with original spine label laid down; lacking frontispiece map and binder's leaf free endpapers renewed intermittent foxing else a very nice copy. 193119347Peking: Chinese Painting Association of Peking 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 18 leaves 10 x 13.25 inches oblong in original string-tied brocade boards with mounted paper label. A few spots of loss to the brocade offsetting from silver paint to adjacent pages light soiling to title page all else very good. Printed in an edition of just 100 copies this volume contains 101 hand-colored illustrations with captions in English and Chinese translating the purely pictorial signs into written form. Historically Chinese shops used pictorial signs due to low literacy rates in the local population. Although certain aspects of the signs were fairly universal depicting the articles for sale as the author explains in the preface "the shop signs of different parts of China varied according to the customs of the people" especially when the items being sold were not easily represented by pictures. In these cases centuries-old local traditions prevailed. Fung writes: "The wine flag can be recognized from a great distance when one wants to satisfy his thirst he will not have to strain his optic nerves to get what he wants; they are as conspicuous as the barber poles in Western Countries. The only explanation that I can give for the existence of these pictorial signs is that in the former times the percentage of illiteracy among the people was very low. I am sure with the establishment of the new public school system that most of the Chinese people can read the written language of the country. Therefore it is plain to see that these signs will gradually disappear as they are no longer necessary. Eventually they will become nothing but relics of the ancient Chinese Customs. So it is very advisable for those who are interested in things Chinese to add a copy of this album to their collection in Orientalia.". Chinese Painting Association of Peking hardcover books

15265Extensive correspondence collection 1920-1940s. 66 letters by various authors mostly women native to the Indian sub-continent all very unusual in the fact that they are highly educated and in the midst of further studies or early in their careers decades prior to Indian Independence. The letters are addressed to a young teacher Probha who was former classmate to most of the writers as well as a few to her sister Rani or to both and follows them as they finish school enter teacher training college and ultimately fan out over India as bearers of a new generation of independent Indian women. In 1931 Indian female literacy hovered at just under 3% making the experiences of these forerunners and their correspondence incredibly rare.

Prior to Indian Independence from Britain Gandhi called for uplifting the status of women through education and recognition of their inherent worth as human beings. Determined to inculcate the equality of the sexes into Indian culture Gandhi publicly did household tasks that were traditionally women's work and declared that "the future is with women." Indeed other activists also equated India's independence with new freedoms for women. However by 1931 Indian female literacy hovered under 3% and was often lower in the rural provinces where schools were few child marriage was prevalent and patriarchal norms dominated society. On the cusp of vast cultural change educated women and female schoolteachers and professionals were the rare exception.

These letters record the interactions between a rare group of highly educated women their thirst for personal and financial independence as well as their conflicting feelings regarding the traditions that defined their lives and restricted them. Their nexus was the Queen Victoria Girls' High School in Agra a small city in the rural northern province of Uttar Pradesh most notable for being the home of the world famous Taj Mahal a symbol of reverence to a much-loved wife of antiquity and of honor to the traditional woman. In its tall shadow young sisters Probha and Rani Thomas attended high school at "QVHS" in the late 1920s-early 1930s where lifelong friendships developed with female students Libawati Ivy Monica Lila Mercy Winnie among others. Most of them became teachers where the extraordinary nature of their achievement stood in stark relief to the lot of most other women "This year only one out of five girls has passed from our village schools." As their lives continued and they spread across the country education became the uniting factor that drove the young women forward and brought them back to each other. "Probha what are you going to do now I am going back to old Q.V. to become a teacher and I am feeling very sad as my dear old class girls won't be there. All these past years seem like a dream. So soon the parting took place. No more Tenthies no more H.M. Club. All have faded like a passing cloud.I shall never find such a jolly set again Probha. This future seems very hard." They were witness to an extraordinary moment in history when the world was changing particularly for women and with their education they are in a unique position to describe the change "It is funny that when it is time for us to be silent we have to look after our visitors and perform useless ceremonies-someday we'll change but not yet." One recalls a train ride in which she sat near "a bold Gandhi's follower. In his eloquent poetical language he was telling people that he had been to jail and was saying that for the love of country he can endure anything." Probha and Rani's father a judge had lessons for them about the danger of Revolutionary activities when one of their friends gets involved "Arel De is intelligent and emotional but he has no self control. You may write to him but make it plain that you will drop correspondence if he writes politics again. He is either already on Police books or will soon be." Though they shied away from direct involvement in politics they encapsulated Indian women's liberation in the early century: striving after independent employment deferring marriage yet with respect for their elders. In one letter Monica sadly reports to Probha "I am not coming back to school. Although I am feeling very bad but yes father has done what is good for me. I asked many times to let me go but he forced me to stay here." And in another poignant letter "Lovey" writes "Rani sis do you remember once we were talking about this problem of getting married Now very soon I shall be facing it. John wants to settle down after my working for one year only & I wish to work for at least two years. I think I shall have to do my parents will decide. Please pray that I may get a chance of working for at least two years."

In tone the women are warm and sisterly to an extent not found in letters of Western cultural origin and also profoundly honest in reporting to one another their successes and failures; a good or bad test score the struggle to study while encountering difficulties such as lack of clean drinking water and large snakes and even having the security of their families placed on their young shoulders "May God help me. May I pass in the 3rd division only for it is difficult time for us two sisters. Our father's money is nearly spent and if I pass I go for training. Please remember us in your prayers that we may soon become independent." As one of the young women finds out who goes back to QVHS as a student teacher life becomes more complicated as time goes on "My examination result is so bad.my poor mother is working so hard at home. It was too much to disappoint her.I know you would ask me but why have you done so badly The only answer I can give you is that I got 7 periods a week to teach & being a slow writer the notes of lessons & the preparation took all my study time." What they share is a clarify on the value of their education to all their future lives: "All the Normal Students High School and the middle candidates.tell each one of them that I wish them a very brilliant success. Tell them that I remember each one of them in my prayers that they all may pass in the 1st Division with scholarships."

Cultural references show the writers and recipients of these letters were generally native of India although they often went by Western cognoms. A few of the letters from British servicemen or coworkers offer an interesting perspective on intercultural understanding and friendship in the days when Indian Independence loomed so closely on the horizon. A serviceman befriended by Probha writes "In those days we were very ignorant. We knew nothing at all of the country or the people and their ways and customs. I think we were most surprised to find that you spoke English. We were astounded to see such bad conditions existed for some people and very upset to find such a feeling of bitterness between our two peoples." Reflecting the dichotomy inherent to the lives of these girls several letters are from their mother who simultaneously pushes them on to achieve independence and reminds them of their cultural anchor. anxious for them and resolute that they will have every opportunity possible. An intelligent woman in her own right Probha's mother offers advice on her exams "Your last quarterly should have had better marks. I wrote a few little hints in my last letter. Please keep them in mind.I'll send your saris in a day or two.I couldn't get even a bit of voil in the bazaar. There was no chance of getting it from any out station. I've used the bits I had at home.I pray God to be with my baby & help her to be a true hearted & brave soldier."

The letters are in English except for a few brief passages in Hindi as English was the primary language of education and commerce prior to Independence. A few are from an object of romance; a male teacher who courts Probha with poetry but does not succeed in convincing her to give up her freedom as a single woman. A rare archive of letters from an extremely uncommon cross-section of pre-Independence society: the forerunner of the modern educated and independent woman of India. unknown books

First English Edition.

This is a highly regarded chronicle of the conquest and colonization of Peru by Spaniards in the latter part of the 16th century and is lauded for its at the time objectivity. Cieza de Leon's Chronica was to appear in 4 sections this translation being the first part only all that was available of the history until the latter part of the 19th century.

Pedro Cieza de León was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is known primarily for his history and description of Peru Crónicas del Perú. He wrote this book in four parts but only the first was published during his lifetime; the remaining sections were not published until the 19th and 20th centuries. Cieza de León was born to a family of Jewish conversos1 around 1520 in Llerena a town in southeastern Extremadura less than 60 mi from Portugal. Although recently converted from Judaism to Catholicism the family enjoyed good social standing in the region because of their networks and business dealings. His father Lope de León was a shopkeeper in the town and his mother Leonor de Cazalla was a native of Llerena. There is scant documentary evidence of the young Cieza de León’s childhood and little is known of his early life before his voyage to the Americas. Given the fact that he left home at 13 it is unlikely that Cieza de León received more than a rudimentary education. In 1536 in Córdoba at 16 Cieza de León was greatly surprised to learn of the discovery of the land of the Incas and so decided to go to Seville to embark on his journey to South America to see for himself the artifacts of precious metals which had been brought to Spain from Cajamarca. In light of the prohibition of entry into the Spanish colonies for Jews and Jewish converts to Catholicism Alonso López and Luis de Torres attested for Cieza de León that he was not prohibited. Jewish converso Pedro López de Cazalla secretary of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro conqueror of the Incan Empire was also his first cousin. He returned to Seville Spain in 1551 and married a woman named Isabel López de Abreu. Here he published in 1553 the first part of the chronicles of Peru Primera Parte. He died the following year leaving the rest of his work unpublished. His Second Part of Chronicles of Peru describing the Incas was translated by Clements Markham and published in 1871 for the Hakluyt Society. In 1909 the fourth part of his chronicle focusing on the civil wars among the Spanish conquerors was published under the title Third Book of the Peruvian Civil Wars. The third part of Cieza de León's Crónicas del Perú which examined the discovery and conquest of Peru by the Spaniards was considered by historians to be lost. The document eventually turned up in a Vatican library and historian Francesca Cantù published a Spanish version of the text in 1979. Though his works are historical and narrate the events of the Spanish conquest of Peru and the civil wars among the Spaniards much of their importance lies in his detailed descriptions of geography ethnography flora and fauna. He was the first European to describe some native Peruvian animal species and vegetables.

Condition:

Expertly rebacked some light rubbing to extremities foxing old book plate on front pastedown else very good. unknown hardcover books
