19512436Hollinwood/Lancs: Ferranti Ltd 1951. First edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE MANUAL FOR ONE OF THE FIRST VIDEO GAMES. VERY POSSIBLY THE FIRST COMPUTER GAME MANUAL. Although they were "keen to be involved" in the 1951 Festival of Britain electrical engineering firm and computing pioneer Ferranti was still without an exhibit by late 1950. John Bennet an employee of the firm stepped up and suggested the construction of a machine that could play Nim a matchstick game in which players compete to force a final move.

<br /> <br /> The Nimrod is considered to be the first or second computer game ever constructed depending on how one defines the term and is certainly the first to be constructed and played outside of North America. It was inspired by the Nimatron an "electro-mechanical machine exhibited at the 1940 World's Fair in New York City" that also played Nim Donovan which isn't typically considered a computer and followed only Toronto's Bertie the Brain built in 1950 which played tic-tac-toe. <br /> <br /> The manual which includes a technical description of the computer appears to be the first of its kind as we can locate no records of any user manuals or pamphlets for the Nimatron or Bertie the Brain both of which were also presented and played at public festivals. <br /> <br /> The game was tremendously well received both at Festival of Britain and at the Berlin Industrial Show in the same year. He also worked with Leni on her 1935 film "Triumph of the Will" as unit manager and head cameraman. 193119347Peking: Chinese Painting Association of Peking 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 18 leaves 10 x 13.25 inches oblong in original string-tied brocade boards with mounted paper label. A few spots of loss to the brocade offsetting from silver paint to adjacent pages light soiling to title page all else very good. Printed in an edition of just 100 copies this volume contains 101 hand-colored illustrations with captions in English and Chinese translating the purely pictorial signs into written form. Historically Chinese shops used pictorial signs due to low literacy rates in the local population. Although certain aspects of the signs were fairly universal depicting the articles for sale as the author explains in the preface "the shop signs of different parts of China varied according to the customs of the people" especially when the items being sold were not easily represented by pictures. In these cases centuries-old local traditions prevailed. Fung writes: "The wine flag can be recognized from a great distance when one wants to satisfy his thirst he will not have to strain his optic nerves to get what he wants; they are as conspicuous as the barber poles in Western Countries.The only explanation that I can give for the existence of these pictorial signs is that in the former times the percentage of illiteracy among the people was very low. I am sure with the establishment of the new public school system that most of the Chinese people can read the written language of the country. Therefore it is plain to see that these signs will gradually disappear as they are no longer necessary. Eventually they will become nothing but relics of the ancient Chinese Customs. Ellington 1886-1960 was a Native of North Carolina and trained at the Ecole des Beauv Arts being the first American to win the top honor for decorative competitions at the École. In addition to his work on this theatre project he designed numerous churches residences and government housing projects in Charleston as well as facilities associated with the Charleston Naval Base during the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his Art Deco buildings of the 1920s for Asheville N.C. The original Dock Street Theatre opened Feb. 12 1736 and was the site of the first building designed for theatric performances in the Thirteen Colonies. Likely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1740 the restored building was built as The Planters Hotel in 1809. The restoration started in 1935 and was completed by the time of the grand opening Nov. 26 1937. Perhaps the sole documentary record of this historic restoration provenance - from the collection of Joseph Hyde Pratt noted North Carolina geologist conservationist state and civic leader and WWI hero with personal invitation to him for the grand opening of Nov. 26 1937 laid in at rear. Also includes two pasted-in newspaper clippings and a series of loosely inserted ephemera two obituary clippings for the book's owner five calling cards a church bulletin a gown ad an envelope with a death notice of a friend and a car rental flyer from Oklahoma. Tracing the life of Laura Nethers nee Earl from her girlhood and marriage to her old age. Obituaries and census records show that Laura was a resident of Colorado Springs for 56 years following her family's move from the South through the Western US.<br/><br/>The inscription to the first page of the album reveals it to be a gift: "1860. A Christmas gift from father. Covington KY." Above this is the ownership stamp of Laura L. Earl. Little did Laura know the album would follow her across 64 years and to a variety of states documenting her relationships and major moments in her life. For researchers it is an opportunity to trace a woman's development from one century to the next across multiple states in the South and West as she grew into a teacher wife and woman's club activist. Growing up in Kentucky Laura's family moved West. Entries show that she and her father lived awhile in Minnesota and she became a teacher in Wisconsin before marrying and settling in Colorado Springs. Entries come from family pastors students neighbors and friends. Many entries show women's bonds across large stretches of space and together they show what a mobile lifestyle women were increasingly living. No longer confined so a small radius or single homestead they were maintaining relationships and making friends across the miles. <br/><br/>Some early entries like that of Celia E. Hay Illinois 1878 are traditional in nature: "Over our hearts and into our lives shadows may sometimes fall But the sunshine is never wholly dead And heaven is shadowless overhead And God is over all." Students politely thank her for her work and hope they made an impact too: "I ever remain your true friend James U. Cobb. To Miss Laura Earl much Respected Teacher Ellensboro Wisconsin Feb 25 1872." People write poetic verses on friendship or her new marriage throughout.<br/><br/>Yet more often entries are personal. In 1879 Laura's father leaves her a humorous message that "It is ten o'clock and your sixty-one year old father expects a long trip to the Injun Reservation two hundred miles north in the morning.So you see I cannot write any tonight." Elva Walker writes from Colorado in 1885 "We will ever remember our camping trip.and going in a cave" and John Dietrich writes of the same trip "Did it rain while we were camping! I hope we will meet again soon." In August 1919 a friend Emma Eggleston writes an original piece about their recent travel titled Pike's Peak by Auto which begins "19 and 19 was a year to remember from the last of July to the last of September" and which documents in 36 verses the landscapes they passed and the friendship they strengthened while driving. Moments like these are a reminder of changing times -- of early attitudes toward indigenous tribes or of women's freedom as suffrage approached. <br/><br/>A charter member of the Colorado Women's Club and a participant in Frances Willard's Women's Christian Temperance Union according to her obituary Laura's friendship album is a rich space for researchers to trace her movements through communities in the West for genealogists to study the families and lives of contributors and for historians to track which entries come from other educated women and activists. 19133478Michigan 1913. Pebbled cloth ledger measuring 8 x 10 inches with boards rubbed and spine largely perished. Two contemporary black and white photos loosely inserted at rear with subjects unidentified. Comprised of a total of 200 manuscript pages in two hands -- 11 pages in the hand of Elijah W. Middaugh and the remaining 189 pages in the hand of his daughter Julia Edmunds Middaugh. Both leave their ownership inscriptions on the front endpaper with the latter notating that her writing picks up in 1913. A candid poetic and at times heartbreaking family history the present manuscript reveals a young woman grappling with her place in the world and seeking to create a sense of order in her own life by understanding and exerting narrative control over the unstable relationship of her parents. <br/><br/>Elijah affectionately called "Lege" by Julia later in the notebook was born into privilege as the son of a prominent Gross Pointe family. Educated at the University of Michigan and Harvard he also was under the tutelage of private instructors during a stretch in Europe. Disappointing the hopes of his own father a businessman he did not take to the workforce with aplomb. He struggled to maintain himself by selling travel stories and reports to the Detroit Free Press and was fiscally irresponsible. Initially his marriage to the working class widow Juddie Palmer Kelso seemed promising. The owner of a shop in Paw Paw Lake she seemed to provide the industriousness Elijah lacked. According to Julia "the first years of their lives were the happiest." She and her brother were born and her parents "bought a King 8 car and went traveling." Indeed this King 8 features prominently in Elijah's opening narrative wherein he records "My trip in a King Auto from Michigan to San Francisco." From its opening one gleans that Julia's later story is a mixture of fact and father worship. He writes "It was said by that great & good man Emerson that travel is the fool's paradise. Without desiring to offer my own experience in proof of this I may state that I have always found pleasure in traveling." And he scorns those travelers who do not get swept up in the romance of the road focusing instead on practicalities; "greenhorns" he calls them "who would ask how fast we could travel how much it cost per mile." Of course the trip in the end did cost the family greatly. He reports multiple breakdowns and flat tires as he tour goes on; and when his radiator fails he opts to buy a new car rather than wait for a replacement part. What's more Julia's version of the story includes a jarring fact: "It was while we were away on a trip to California that the house burned down. When my parents drove up to the lake that night cold and hungry and eager for home Lege turned the car up the lane and there in the blaze of the headlights stood the gray chimney the only remains of the life that had been."<br/><br/>Julia's longer narrative contains multiple such harrowing incidents. And while she at times praises her mother at one point she says Juddie has "more enterprise and natural courage commonly called guts than any woman I know" she frankly sees Juddie's lower class background as the root of her parents' problems and the ultimate reason for their divorce. Her father meanwhile she glorifies. Rather than focus on his failings as such she creates a hero's arc for him. He failed in business because "he was cut out to be a poet" rather than a captain of industry -- and it was a mark of his own superiority. Indeed she writes "he had a better education and his branch of the human race was a little more cultural." After her parents' split and her mother gaining custody Julia remarks "without father things just weren't the same."<br/><br/>Notably it is the women and the female communities Julia encounters in life that provide support and stability. She recounts that after the house fire her father's sister Clara takes the family into her Gross Pointe home. After the divorce when she discovers "mother and two dirty little kids with a forlorn story she said at once Juddie you'll have to come out with me." It is Clara and later the sisters in a convent where Julia goes to be educated that give the young woman space to process her family pains and reflect on how they shape her selfhood. <br/><br/>It is a unique densely written and research rich piece deserving of study. In addition to providing opportunities for genealogical research including Julia's forebears Emilie Eugene Maynard and Judge A.B. Maynard it has extensive details on early automobile road travel from the Midwest to the West Coast information on early divorce and custody including the impact on children and women's finances female communities and women-run businesses class conflict in marriage courtship and historical narrative studies both fiction and non-fiction performances. It poses a valuable opportunity to study how young women in an age of increased attention towards inequality and rights were affected. The extent to which Julia is independent and mobile links both to the women around her and to a larger movement; at the same time Julia is affected by traditional patriarchal narratives including popular novels that position gender family wealth and class as markers of superior morality. unknown books

Ironically the strike also presaged a massive sweep to power of the Labour Party in the years immediately following a wave which was at least in part a response to the repressive measures employed by the Conservatives against the Trades Union Congress in the General Strike. <br/><br/>Of primary interest here is the complete run of eight issues of The British Gazette a government propaganda sheet edited and including numerous contributions by Winston Churchill who was at this time Chancellor of the Exchequer. Depending upon one's point of view the Gazette marked something of a low-point in Churchill's career: though it claimed to be filling a journalistic void created by striking newspaper workers Churchill's paper was more or less a pure exercise in disinformation filled with intentional inaccuracies intended to build public sentiment against the strikers and to demoralize participants in the strike. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin was said to have given Churchill the Gazette job ".to keep him busy and to keep him from doing worse things" see John M. Davidson Memoirs of a Conservative; the newspaper's prevarications so galled professional journalists that one was moved to write: "One of the worst outrages which the country had to endure - and to pay for - in the course of the strike was the publication of the British Gazette. Hooper 1851 - 1914 considered one of the main proponents of the founding of the school and a prominent Brooklyn NY & national educator; with a copy of the Aug. 23rd 1913 completed and signed Oath of Office of Smith witnessed and notarized; and the Aug. 26 letter regarding the office signed by Mitchell May the Sec. of State of NY; On Aug. 28 Franklin Hooper acknowledges the receipt of the letter of appointment & oath & gives notification of the next Board meeting with mailing envelope; with the October 15th 1913 8-page typed document signed "Estimate of Money Needed for Running Expenses of the New York State School of Agriculture on Long Island from January 1st 1914 to January 1st 1915" prepared by A.A. Johnson and signed by him in ink at the introductory passage and which gives a detailed budget for the school various departments salaries the demonstration farm and more in the original blue paper over-folder; a December 16 1913 typed letter 2 pages signed by Hooper writing to all the Board which declares that ".on Thursday December 11 representatives of the State Comptroller and of the State Attorney General went to Farmingdale and that Messrs. Mott Smith and Ruland were on that day paid by the State Comptroller for their three farms respectively in pursuance of the contract as made by the Board of Trustees of the school and the three vendors.thereby completing the transaction for the purchase of lands for the school. First edition.<br /><br />La Araucana is an epic poem in Spanish about the Spanish conquest of Chile by Alonso de Ercilla; it is also known in English as The Araucaniad. It was considered the national epic of the Kingdom of Chile and one of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age Siglo de Oro. The poem consists of 37 cantos that are distributed across the poem's three parts. The first part was published in 1569; the second part appeared in 1578 when it was published with the first part; the third part was published with the first and second parts in 1589. The poem shows Ercilla to be a master of the octava real the complicated stanza in which many other Renaissance epics in Castilian were written. A difficult eight-line unit of 11-syllable verses that are linked by a tight rhyme scheme the octava real was a challenge few poets met. It had been adapted from Italian only in the 16th century and it produces resonant serious-sounding verse that is appropriate to epic themes. The work describes the initial phase of the Arauco War which was born as a Spanish conquests attempt not at all comparable in importance to those of Hernán Cortés who helped conquer the Aztec empire and Francisco Pizarro who initiated the overthrow the Inca empire. Contrary to the epic conventions of the time however Ercilla placed the lesser conquests of the Spanish in Chile at the core of his poem because the author was a participant in the conquest and the story is based on his experiences there. On scraps of paper in the lulls of fighting Ercilla jotted down versified octaves about the events of the war and his own part in it. These stanzas he later gathered together and augmented in number to form his epic. It was the first poem of its kind written by a participant in the course of the events narrated and the first to immortalize the beginnings of a modern country. In the minds of the Chilean people La Araucana is a kind of Iliad that exalts the heroism pride and contempt of pain and death of the legendary Araucanian leaders and makes them national heroes today. Thus we see Ercilla appealing to the concept of the "noble savage" which has its origins in classical authors and took on a new lease of life in the renaissance - c.f. Montaigne's essay Des Canibales and was destined to have wide literary currency in European literature two centuries later. He had in fact created a historical poem of the war in Chile which immediately inspired many imitations.<br /><br />La Araucana is deliberately literary and includes fantastical elements reminiscent of medieval stories of chivalry. The narrator is a participant in the story at the time a new development for Spanish literature. Influences include Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. Also features extended description of the natural landscape. La Araucana's successes—and weaknesses—as a poem stem from the uneasy coexistence of characters and situations drawn from Classical sources primarily Virgil and Lucan both translated into Spanish in the 16th century and Italian Renaissance poets Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso with material derived from the actions of contemporary Spaniards and Araucanians. The mixture of Classical and Araucanian motifs in La Araucana often strikes the modern reader as unusual but Ercilla's turning native peoples into ancient Greeks Romans or Carthaginians was a common practice of his time. For Ercilla the Araucanians were noble and brave—only lacking as their Classical counterparts did the Christian faith. Caupolicán the Indian warrior and chieftain who is the protagonist of Ercilla's poem has a panoply of Classical heroes behind him. His valour and nobility give La Araucana grandeur as does the poem's exaltation of the vanquished: the defeated Araucanians are the champions in this poem which was written by one of the victors a Spaniard. Ercilla's depiction of Caupolicán elevates La Araucana above the poem's structural defects and prosaic moments which occur toward the end when Ercilla follows Tasso too closely and the narrative strays from the author's lived experience. Ercilla the poet-soldier eventually emerges as the true hero of his own poem and he is the figure that gives the poem unity and strength. The story is considered to be the first or one of the first works of literature in the New World cf. Cabeza de Vaca's Naufragios—Shipwrecked or Castaways for its fantastical/religious elements it is arguable whether that is a "traveler's account" or actual literature; and Bernal DÃaz del Castillo's Historia verdadera de la conquista de Nueva España The Conquest of New Spain. La Araucana's more dramatic moments also became a source of plays. But the Renaissance epic is not a genre that has as a whole endured well and today Ercilla is little known and La Araucana is rarely read except by specialists and students of Spanish and Latin American literatures and of course in Chile where it is subject of special attention in the elementary schools education both in language and history. Black buckram album 10" x 13" containing a one-page printed introduction by Preston and 60 gelatin silver prints by Waddell inserted into pre-cut corners rectos only each with a fairly detailed typed caption underneath. Very good condition. According to the Introduction Clyde Waddell was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the Army where he was attached to the Public Relations Staff of the Southeast Asia Command. After two busy years on documenting action on the Burma front Waddell took the photographs in this album while on leave in Calcutta. "By the time he completed this project which brought him into some of the remotest out-of-bounds areas" writes Preston "he was flooded with requests from Americans and Britishers for copies of his photographs. That is how this album came to be.As a documentary of Calcutta it's tops." The album includes wonderful views of the city and its people including many bustling street scenes buildings Hindustan Building Karnani Estates American Red Cross Burra Club Jain Temple Nimtolla Mosque the Stock Exchange billboards street vendors and performers among them a snake charmer and shops and markets--including a wonderful shot of American GIs browsing at a book stall. There are also scenes of poverty and struggle including striking tram workers homeless people sleeping in the streets an opium den and a woman dying on a sidewalk as people walk by indifferent to her plight. The captions are chatty offering both information and Waddell's personal commentary on the scenes. This particular copy of the album belonged to Lyle Oberwise 1908-1993. Like Waddell Oberwise was a an American Army photographer assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of operations. But he is better known as a prolific Milwaukee street photographer whose work was discovered only upon his death. More than 43000 slides he shot in Milwaukee between 1945 and 1993 now reside at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. There is a photo of Oberwise in his military uniform mounted on the verso of the title page of this album.
