Thomas Barlow 1607-1691 was an English academic and clergyman who became Provost of The Queen's College Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising the Rising of the North had just failed. Pius then issued a bull Regnans in Excelsis dated April 27 1570 that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response Elizabeth who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private now actively started persecuting them. Condition: Original bards with new period spine and red label with gilt lettering to spine corners rubbed and bumped else a good to very good copy. Recent full calf with new endpapers original red spine label preserved three armorial ink stamps on the top edge of the text block. Tissue repair to first page of table of contents ocasional foxing and minor soiling in the margins; overall quite clean and sound. "Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary and the present account.is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer and the text contains a number of descriptions and illustrations of Chinese artifacts and novelties. Among these are a plate depicting musical instruments extensive renditions of Chinese melodies in western western notation and a long description with illustration of an abacus" Hill 62. Historian Michael Adas notes that Barrow "interspersed descriptions of his travels and personal experiences with lengthy discussions of varying aspects of Chinese culture.His judgments on the quality of Chinese life and material culture tended to be favorable at the beginning of his residence in China but grew more and more disparaging as time passed." Unlike Jesuit writers who praised the sophistication of Chinese science and culture Barrow argued that a once-great civilization had been on the decline since the fifteenth century providing "an implicit contrast between static past-minded backward China and the continually improving foreward-looking industrializing states of Europe Adas Machines as the Measure of Man pp 179-180. The son of the naturalist John Bartram. As a boy he accompanied his father on many of his travels to the Catskill Mountains the New Jersey Pine Barrens New England and Florida. In 1773 he embarked upon a four-year journey through eight southern colonies. Bartram made many drawings and took notes on the native flora and fauna and the native American Indians. In 1774 he explored the St. Johns River where he had memorable encounters with aggressive alligators and also visited a principal Seminole village at Cuscowilla where his arrival was celebrated with a great feast. He met Ahaya the Cowkeeper chief of the Alachua band of the Seminole tribe. When Bartram explained to the Cowkeeper that he was interested in studying the local plants and animals the chief was amused and began calling him Puc Puggy the flower hunter.2 Bartram continued his explorations of the Alachua Savannah or what is today Paynes Prairie. William Bartram wrote of his experiences exploring the Southeast in his book Travels through North & South Carolina East & West Florida the Cherokee Country the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy and the Country of the Chactaws Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians published in 1791 and which is today simply known as Bartram's Travels. It was considered at the time one of the foremost books on American natural history. Many of Bartram's accounts of historical sites were the earliest records including the Georgia mound site of Ocmulgee. In addition to its contributions to scientific knowledge Travels is noted for its original descriptions of the American countryside. Bartram's writing influenced many of the Romantic writers of the day. William Wordsworth Samuel Taylor Coleridge and François René de Chateaubriand are known to have read the book and its influence can be seen in many of their works. Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis in their book Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley name Bartram as "the first naturalist who penetrated the dense tropical forests of Florida."<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some rubbing to original boards page 143 of volume one has small burn mark affecting text half title bound upside down in back old water stain to plate of volume two. Baseball Magazine was published for almost 50years ending in the late 1950s. This copy was probably the first published after the official end of WWII. An editorial in this edition talks about post war plans by some teams to improve their stadiums. This would include the New York Yankees. The cover photograph features the Chicago Clubs' pitching staff. On Bates' personal stationery dated Jan. 6 1906 and headed "Hon. Knute Nelson United States Senate Washington D.C. Dear Sir:- I have the honor to enclose under separate cover a copy of "The Panama Canal System and Projects" and venture to hope that some of the matter contained therein may be of interest to you." Bates then goes on to explain the cost scale and completion time for his plan in the next paragraph. The rest of the letter goes on to explain how his plan will ".submerge entirely the swamps at sea level which at the present time extend all along the prospective canal." making ".fresh water lakes of clean water in which a vessel having large steerage can make twice as rapid speed as in the constricted earth bounded out of any lakeless canal.". And finally stating that "The radical sanitary improvement to be brought about by drowning under twenty-seven feet of water all the fever swamps in the vicinity of the canal is apparent." Which it certainly was given that the French had lost over 20000 lives in their failed attempt to build a canal in Panama due to mosquito-carried diseases. Lindon W. Bates was an American engineer author of the 1905 book "The Panama Canal: System and Projects" who worked with Theodore P. Shonts head of the Panama Plan Commission and with John F. Wallace the engineer of the Panama Canal. Senator Knute Nelson was a Civil War veteran served in both the Wisconsin and Minnesota Legislatures was Governor of Minnesota and was the first Scandinavian-born American to be elected to the Senate where he served from 1895 until his death in 1923.
