"Nella terra di Pakhet" non è una guida archeologica tout court né un libro fotografico sull'Egitto, ma è un viaggio, emozionale e scientifico al contempo, alla scoperta di un Egitto "nascosto", lontano dai percorsi turistici, perché sostanzialmente chiuso ai visitatori - e spesso anche agli stessi studiosi -, in quello che gli egittologi chiamano "Medio Egitto", ma che più correttamente è l'Egitto Centrale, dal governatorato di Beni Suef, appena a Sud del Cairo, a quello di Sohag, che finisce ad Abydos. Ad accompagnarci in questo viaggio di scoperta ed esplorazione è Maurizio Zulian, che in trent'anni, come un novello Flaubert, ha girato in lungo e in largo per quei luoghi, visitando anche più volte i siti, raccogliendo sui suoi taccuini una messe di informazioni, archiviando decine di migliaia di fotografie (oggi parte dell'Archivio on line della Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto), incontrando direttori di missioni archeologiche da ogni parte del mondo e confrontandosi con loro. Con più di 800 foto inedite e il racconto in prima persona sui 31 siti archeologici più importanti dell'Egitto Centrale, il lettore si immedesima esploratore al fianco di Zulian, entra nelle tombe precluse al pubblico, ammira i vasti paesaggi della valle del Nilo, conosce riti millenari e usi e costumi moderni. Ma "Nella terra di Pakhet" è anche occasione di ricerca e approfondimento, grazie al ricco apparato curato da Graziano Tavan: bibliografia, indici analitici, glossario e tavole cronologiche.

In this study, Arjan Zuiderhoek attempts to answer the question why this should have been so. Focusing on Roman Asia Minor, he argues that the surge in elite public giving was not caused by the weak economic and financial position of the provincial cities, as has often been maintained, but by social and political developments and tensions within the Greek cities created by their integration into the Roman imperial system.
