Stamped in blue ink rear -"Passed by Intelligence Section Office Chief of Staff". Written in ink rear -" 355th Battalion Q.M.C. Camp Custer Mich. T.F. Mock Sept. 29 1918". Unclear whether this is in Mock's handwriting. Theodore F. Mock was listed as the Camp Custer Photographer in David V. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library 2013. Camp Custer at Battle Creek Michigan had over 100000 US Army troops pass through its doors between 1917-1919. Sept. 29th 1918 was the day in 1918 after a 56-hour-long bombardment Allied forces breached the so-called Hindenburg Line the last line of German defenses on the Western Front during World War I. SCARCE photograph of Negro troops during World War I with many interesting poses by the soldiers including a pair in boxing pose ! making this a unique piece of African-Americana and U.S. Military history !. 1642100000<p>12mo 5 ½ x 3 ¼ modern calf- backed marbled boards spine lettered in gilt lacking title leaf A2 but with additional engraved title A1 still present ii 329 3 pp. A few chips at the edges of the engraved title and incorrect date in ink at the foot of the engraved title lower margin torn and lacking on page 125 with the loss of a few letters similar loss of lower margin on page 259 some foxing else very good in a fine modern binding. This work was first published by Abbot 1562-1633 in 1599 and was reprinted several times over the next 50 years. Abbot was a notable educator and writer in his time but is best known for being an Archbishop of Canterbury. Abbot provides brief descriptions of Africa Europe and Asia but he also devotes over 80 pages on a discussion of the New World including both North and South America. He even provides a short discussion of the North and South Poles. Interestingly in the margin of page 157 is a manuscript note in an old hand describing Egyptian Pyramids.</p> Printed for Will. Harding's successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. He was head of MPPDA at the time of this publication. Very Good lacking the dustjacket spine titles faded yet still legible rear hinge cracking.
