Added engraved title page signed by Romeyn de Hooghe dated 1691. 12 full-page etchings signed by de Hooghe that depict festival constructions for Williams entry into The Hague in 1691 and also portraits of William and Mary among other emblems. Engraved headpiece and initial decoration on dedication leaf signed by Schoonebeck followed by full-page engraved leaf honoring Chevalier with depictions of Atlas Aristotle and other muses. Full contemporary vellum blind-stamped with central lozenge design; very slight foxing or staining engravings fresh; covers slightly bowed. Initialled bookplate P.M.G to front pastedown. First Edition in French of this biography of William III of England extensively illustrated to show important events in the monarchs life. This work was privately printed for Nicolas Chevalier who was a hobbyist and coin collector. A large proportion of Dutch print-making at the end of the 17th century focused on William III. An almost categorical personality cult surrounded the stadtholder-king. Among the print-makers Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. He is best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. De Hooghes 12 etchings of triumphal arches for this work are adaptations of plates in the works by Bidloo and Tronchin de Breuil published in 1691 and 1692. Adriaen Schoonebeek c. 1657- 1705 is often mentioned because of his appearance as witness for the prosecution in a court case against de Hooghe that formed the climax of a slanderous exchange of pamphets between Orangists and members of the Amsterdam faction in 1690. These animosities did not prevent re- employment of both engravers in executing plates for this Nicolas Chevaliers 1692 illustrated volume on numismatics and the life of King William. Rare. Printed by Prosper Marchand a Huguenot publisher and journalist who fled France in 1709 the work appeared at the 300th anniversary of the invention of printing. Marchand writes that he produced the book "a la sollicitation de quelques amis qui ont cru que le troisième jubile ou la troisième année séculaire de l'imprimerie reveilleroit infailliblement la curiosité du publique touchant l'origine de ce bel art at the request of some friends who believed that the third jubilee or the tercentenary of printing would infallibly wake the public curiosity concerning the origin of this beautiful art." The allegorical frontspiece by J.V. Schley show Minerva and Mercury descending from Heaven granting the gift of printing to Germany who in turn gives it to England Holland France and Italy. Second edition of a 1689 history of missions to Japan prefaced with a general account of the country.<br /><br />Jean Crasset was an ascetical writer born at Dieppe France 3 January 1618 and died at Paris 4 January 1692. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1638 became professor of humanities and philosophy was director for twenty-three years of a famous sodality of men connected with the professed house of the Jesuits in Paris and was also a successful preacher. Crasset is the author of many ascetical works among which are:Methode d'oraison; Considérationes chrétiennes pour tous les jours de l'année; La chrétienne in soli tude; Dissertation sur les oracles des Sibylles which was vigorously attacked; Entretiens pour la jeunesse. He also published in 1689 a Historie de l'église du japon which has been translated into several languages but which is considered inferior to that of Charlevoix. Crasset's history was scarcely original for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative from 1624 to 1658. The objection is made that the work lacks precision is heavy and is crowded with details. The author attributed the origin of the persecution of 1597 to the imprudence of the friars in making their religious ceremonies public. There is a posthumous work of his entitled La foy victorieuse de l'infidélite et du libertinage. On 9 September 1656 the Bishop of Orléans issued an interdict against him for having in one of his sermons charged several ecclesiastics with sustaining the propositions condemned by the Bull of Innocent X Cum occasione 31 May 1653. The interdict was removed in the following February.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Nicely rebound in half leather.
