Folding trade card 2.5 x 3.75 inches with views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and the attached hospital on the front and back and text inside. Light soiling; very good. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was "staffed by volunteers and provided relief for Union troops on their way to or returning from battlefields in the South. Its services included warm meals temporary housing medical services and washing facilities. From its opening on May 27 1861 to its closing on December 1 1865 over 800000 men were assisted in this saloon and served over 1025000 meals" Smithsonian. This card was made specifically for the 50th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers who spent December 20th 1862 to January 7th 1863 in Philadelphia before departing by sea for duty in the Port Hudson Campaign in Louisiana. The unit's regimental historian later noted that the regiment "received every attention and the most generous hospitality" at both the Union Saloon and the nearby Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and concluded that "words can hardly express the kindness lavished upon the soldiers by the people of this patriotic city during the war." The interior of the card welcomes the regiment includes a roster of the field staff and line officers present in Philadelphia and provides a list of places of interest that soldiers might wish to visit while in the city. A complete uncut sheet dating from the early 1840s from the second issue of stock to build a Mormon-sponsored hotel in Nauvoo Illinois. It should be noted that Joseph Smith placed the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon in the cornerstone of the building in 1841. Construction was stopped in 1844 in order to concentrate on building Nauvoo Temple. Condition: This example is well centered with above average margins on all four sides. There are two pin holes in the margins that might very well be guide marks. The corners appear sharp but we do notice two minor distractions in the margins of the $50 note. Carl Jackson The Pennsylvania State University - " Dear Mr. Jackson I wanted to draw your attention to the unique communications experiment in bringing the Apollo 11 live telecasts to Anchorage. This will be the first direct intercontinental link to Alaska using two communications satellites in a complex distribution chain for the tests." He goes on to talk about the experiment "heralding a new era for Alaska" and how it will in particular to bring audio-visual techniques to Alaskan schools libraries hospitals universities and community centers. He finishes by by asking Jackson for future help in bringing new techniques or applications "to help accelerate this era". Mike Gravel was the colorful Democratic Senator from Alaska 1969-81. He became nationally known in 1971 for his filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal effectively ending the draft in the United States and for putting the Pentagon Papers into the public record by reading 4100 pages of the 7000 page document into the Senate record. W. Carl Jackson at the time was Director of Libraries at Penn State University. The letter is Near Fine folded twice for mailing staple top left corner small crease top edge. In this letter dated Sept. 18 1961 Johnson is extending his personal invitation as Chairman of the National Advisory Council for the Peace Corps for the recipient to attend a regional Peace Corps Conference one of 14 scheduled to take place after the passage of the Peace Corps act. The 6 paragraph letter gives detailed reservation information and is SIGNED in blue ink "Sincerely Lyndon B. Johnson". The Peace Corps was established by Executive Order 10924 issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1 1961 announced by televised broadcast March 2 1961 and authorized by Congress on September 21 1961. The Sargent Shriver letter dated Oct. 3 1961 thanks the recipient for serving as a member of the Host Committee for the Peace Corps Regional Conference held in Minneapolis MN. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. was the first director of the Peace Corps 1961-1966 appointed by his brother-in-law President John F. Kennedy. In 1972 he was chosen to be the Democratic nominee for Vice President to run with George McGovern after Thomas Eagleton resigned from the ticket. The recipient of both letters was W. Carl Jackson who was then Chief Acquisitions Librarian University of Minnesota. Mr. Jackson later became Dean of Libraries at Indiana University and authored the book "The Log of the Carla Mia." about his solo sailboat crossing of the Atlantic in 1978. He was lost at sea and declared legally dead in 1981 attempting to sail from Europe to America after wreckage from his boat was found off the coast of Spain. The letter of December relates Smith's attempts to find buyers and leasors for the restaurant ".I am bothered to death by the bills of the place existing before you left some of which I have personally guaranteed.have also had a proposition from a Spaniard to take the restaurant.As a restaurant is always a dead loser except under very competent management this seems to me to be most advantageous.The quarantine has been taken off the camps here and business is much better."; continuing to ask for money. This venture was perhaps an attempt to meet the needs of the very large population of North Americans residing in Cuba after the Spanish-American War; many businesses opened especially in Havana including hotels bars and restaurants. Nelson opened the Studio restaurant in Havana in 1899 and was not very successful per the contents of these letters.
