The first volume in The American Trails Series by Bobbs-Merrill. It is fitting that this book examines the first trail opened to begin the settlement of the west through what is now Virgina Tennessee and Kentucky. Vance Randolph 1890-1982 was best known for his studies of the folklore of the Ozarks but--somewhat ironically-- this pamphelt is dedicating to conveying the aspects of Davy Crockett's story did not belong to the realm of folklore. Most of the content is drawn from Crockett's autobiography with material on the last four months of his life taken from the 1836 book Randolph refers to as "Colonel Crockett's Texas Adventures" actually called "Col. Toulmin was a Unitarian minister who left England after facing harassment for his outspoken political and religious views. He met Thomas Jefferson and James Madison soon after arriving in the United States and with their help was appointed President of Transylvania University in Lexington. He resigned in 1796 to become Secretary of State of Kentucky and in 1804 Jefferson appointed him to a judgeship in the superior court of the Washington District of the Mississippi Territory. His reports on Virginia and Kentucky were written in 1793 and 1794 at the request of his Lancashire parishioners who wished to have a first hand account of various parts of America. Light soiling and edgewear about very good. Text on one side describes what visiting nurses do including offering in-home care to the sick advising expectant mothers "on matters of hygeine" teaching general health information and holding "Well Baby Conferences" where babies are weighted and mothers advised as to their proper care. On the other side is a list of rates but also a noted that "where patients cannot afford to pay stated prices less amounts are acceptable and free care when necessary." Visiting nurse associations were formed in many cities in the northeastern United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Most offered instruction on hygiene general health care maternity and childcare to poor women especially recent immigrants. unknown books
