One of 50 copies printed for private circulation. 30 pp. 7 x 10.5 inches in original wrappers illustrated with one original photograph and one photomechanically reproduced photograph. Presentation inscription on the title page to a member of a prominent Allegheny County family "Mr. R.C. Wrenshall from John Way Jr." Wrappers are chipped and only just attached by a thread to the text block most of backstrip is gone margins of the page with the original photograph are foxed. Otherwise clean. John Way Jr. 1831-1902 was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Sewickley and he taught a bible class for young men for 60 years. He helped to organize the Young Men's Christian Association in his area taught elocution classes for adults acted as the first president of the Public Library in Sewickley. In 1877 after finding the local schools unsuitable for his children he financed a new building and reopened the Sewickley Academy for Boys which had originally operated from his childhood home beginning in 1838. This book is primarily a history of the religious institutions churches and sunday schools of the town but also includes other details such as the prices of goods and wages recorded in an early account book and what residents and buildings were present in the town c. 1800. Late 1800's cookbook/trade catalogue putting forth the favorable qualities of the "vapor stove" made by The Standard Lighting Co. Vapor stoves burned multiple fuels stove gasoline kerosene or distillate with the advantage of quicker cooking times and less heat then coal or wood. The disadvantage of these stoves were the tendency to explode into giant fireballs of ignited gasoline vapor that could and would incinerate the entire house. 20 pages of illustrations accompanied by a cookbook teeming with recipes. Chapters filled with constructive advise on rearing livestock making butter brewing and the management of malt liquors the management of plants seeds and the greenhouse while other advice such as using a bush held by a rope to clean a chimney as opposed to employing a child children will damage the interior bricks seem a bit outdated. Accredited to Mrs. Rundell of New Systems of Domestic Cookery fame but there are many who think this is a false theory due to her well published falling out with the John Murray. All edges gilt dentelle edging and blindstamped Missing 1 cm. of leather at the head of spine. Interior crisp and clean. Large folio 21.25 x 15.25 inches pp 12 xi 1 88 187 xxxiii 18 with index 25 attractive colored maps in English and Chinese and many colored charts and graphs. Original embossed black cloth with beveled edges and gilt titles. Some chipping the the cloth at the spine ends and on raised bands corners rubbed through but a very good copy internally sound and clean. A fascinating and comprehensive reference providing extensive statistics on all aspects of Chinese manufacturing industry agricultural production natural resources and trade imports and exports broken down by province and city as well short write-ups on the history and principal commodities of dozens of cities and on the climate geography and mineral resources of China as a whole. There is a lengthy and most interesting list of "Commodities of the World's Commerce Compilied with Special Reference to China" that provides information on the sources and uses of such items as buffalo horns coprolites dragon's blood Ignatius beans kukui oil mangrove bark sea slugs and silkworm gut. A list of public companies in China detailing their capital profits etc. is included as an appendix and this is followed by 39 pages of ads for manufacturers shipbuilders and shipping lines insurance companies banks and import/export firms. The author was an English journalist and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society who lived in Asia for nearly two decades traveling in China India Tibet and Burma. In 1920 this book was advertised as "the only work of the kind every produced for and about China." Other works of this nature have undoubtedly been produced in the ensuing century but it is hard to imagine any could be as impressive a production as this one. The museum has over 400000 items in its permanent collection making it one of the largest in China. Especially notable is the museum's enormous collections of Ming and Qing imperial porcelain which is among the largest in the world. Preparatory Office for the Academia Sinica Museum was established in 1933. Dr. Fu Ssu-nien envisioned the museum as a center for educating the public promoting society's interest in cultural heritage and broadening the historical horizons of common citizens. By associating the artifacts with their relevant natural history the museum differed considerably from other museums which simply displayed their collections out of context. Some of the Museum's contents were sent to Taiwan during the Japanese invasion of China. Profusely illustrated with color plates. Text in English and Chinese.
