20306Seattle: Self-published. Undated ca. 1915. 4-1/4 x 6" stapled printed and photo-illustrated wraps signed in pencil by the author on the upper wrap; pp. 30 2; worn the wraps loose from the pages with chips out at the staples and several closed tears internally clean. Fair to good overall. Contains excerpts from various publications about Meeker's trailblazing escapades issued between 1907 and the occasion of the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. In his own words the fellow once known as "the Hop King of the World" tells the tale of a man and his ox-cart as they travel the original Oregon Trail. Though we may mock as did many at the time Meeker did succeed in drawing national attention to the Trail and in its permanent commemoration with granite markers. Self-published paperback books

Very good. 5-3/4 x 9" sewn printed wraps pp. 72 wraps foxed and lightly soiled spine with loss to the head and tail with lesser chipping along its length but the binding sound and text clean A most-thoroughgoing census of all 150 members of the class of 1855 including dropouts five months in the making as per the Editor's "Valedictory" statement. The preliminary pages give in copious detail descriptions of various meetings and reunions which have taken place in the years all four of them since graduation and then lists every member of the class along with "Where Are They Now" biographical tidbits that make my mother's Christmas letters look tame. These are followed by various cross-indices by place of birth date of birth "the aggregate age of the Class at graduation was 1978 years" time of entrance profession etc. Then are listed those who "left without graduating" in decreasing order of years of attainment poor William Ross Degarmo "Entered from Fort Miller N.J. Oct. 18 1851; left Dec. 24 1851 and has not since been heard from". A labor of love truly by one committed to the cause. Wheeler would not alas be much longer with us as was no doubt true of many of his classmates -- he was killed fighting for the Union side in 1864. His devotion lived on however: After the war his mother published a memorial volume entitled "Letters of William Wheeler of the Class of 1855 Y.C." Houghton 1875. May 1912." 9 x 6 inches 19 pp including nine half-tone photographic plates in original stapled wrappers. Some soiling to first page moderate general handling wear. William Henry Heard 1850-1937 was born into slavery in Georgia. After emancipation he worked as a farm laborer but pursued every opportunity for education during his free time eventually enabling him to attend the University of South Carolina and secure a teaching certification. He served briefly in the South Carolina State legislature and in 1878 he joined and became an active member of the African Methodist Episcopal A.M.E. Church. In 1895 Grover Cleveland appointed him Consul General to Liberia where he also served as Superintendent of the Liberia Annual Conference of the A.M.E. Church and spearheaded construction of the first A.M.E. church in Monrovia. In this scarce pamphlet Heard provides the A.M.E. General Conference with an assessment of the state of missionary work in Liberia and Sierra Leone. He reports favorably on the situation in Sierra Leone but says that the work in Liberia is "more in name than in fact" due to insufficient funding and poor sanitary conditions which result in sick missionaries returning to the United States every few years and "disorganizes and hinders the progress of our work." He makes several recommendations for change increased salaries and travel allowances purchase of a boat to replace the canoes currently used for river travel and provides lists of receipts and expenditures for 1908-1912 and missionary appointments for 1912.
