14677Mid- 19th Century Tulwar fighting sword. The Tulwar was used by Muslim adversaries from Persia Iran Afghanistan and Northern India. It was both a cavalry and infantry weapon. The Tulwar had historically been the quintessential combat sword due to its superior handling while mounted on horseback. With a curved blade optimized for cutting and slashing with sweeping cuts delivered from the shoulder by a horseman without the danger of the blade getting stuck in bone or armor. It allowed for fierce slashing on all sides cutting through enemy formations while mounted on horseback. The sheaths were made with two very thin wood plates covered in fabric which explains their short life and absence here. This particular tulwar has a hand forged curved steel blade and steel handle with a disk shaped pommel. Dated to the mid- 19th century. Overall length 33". Blade shows signs of use in good condition. unknown books
