Newman a methodist minister connected to the U.S. Senate. Brigham Young was asked to defend a biblical basis for plural marriage by Newman but Orson Pratt took his place in the debate. The article states that this event had been miscontrued as follows ""he Newman contrued into a challenge.""Does the Bible sanction Polygamy"" but had so frightened the Latter-Day Saints that they dared not to meet him.""
