A public official declaration of the LDS church denouncing claims that the church supports the killing of apostates that the church can supersede or alter the judgement of any civil court that the church aims to interfere with civil rights that they harbor illegal immigrants that are LDS and that the church is hostel towards or wishes to overthrow the U.S. government. They ""earnestly appeal to the American Press and people not to condemn the Latter-day Saints unheard"" and ""ask for the suspension of national and popular judgement until a full investigation can be had"". unknown

This copy signed by ink to the title page by someone who was in the 19th Regiment in Madras 1918. Two beautiful coloured lithographic plates as called for. Original publisher's red cloth - gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. Very scarce. No inscriptions except for the aforementioned inscription. Yellow endpapers. Some rubbing with some loss of cloth to each joint at the head of the spine. The tail of the spine in similar condition. Rubbing with slight loss of cloth in a few places to the board edges. 1859H13159New York: James Miller 1859. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo original pale brown cloth very good light wear and soil owner's old name stamp on pastedown and first blank. The last novel by Charles James Cannon 1800-1860 an Irish-Catholic author born to immigrant parents in NYC who wrote extensively about the Irish in America. This novel concerns the children of the Condons poor Irish Catholics who live in the tennements and the more high-styled Lyffords also of Irish extraction but with new wealth from the liquor trade and now agnostic. The novel also contains a barely veiled self portrait of the author a self-taught writer with little formal education who found work as a custom's clerk in NY and wrote in his spare time. Charles Fanning's 2014 book on Irish-American authors has an excellent chapter on Cannon's work. James Miller hardcover
