Cannon 1871-1945 was a physiologist and chairman of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School. His career began at Harvard where he "studied the mechanics of digestion in surgical conditions and after surgical operations" Garrison 548. He then became interested in the medical origins of emotions and is known for coining the phrase "fight or flight" in his book Bodily Changes in Pain Hunger Fear and Rage: An Account of Recent Researches into the Function of Emotional Excitement New York: Appleton 1915. Cannon also expanded on a rudimentary theory of Claude Bernard to develop the concept of homeostasis and was president of the American Physiological Society from 1916-18.
