Old folds; lightly browned; Very Good.

Maddox a Confederate veteran and five-term Congressional Representative for Georgia 1893-1905 writes seeking appointment to the Commission in charge of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park which as part of its charter required that at least one Confederate veteran be a member: ".As you know I was a Confederate soldier; and I was in the battle of Chickamauga before I was sixteen years old. The Chickamauga Battlefield is in my old Judicial Circuit when I was Judge of the Superior Court and it is in the District which I represented in Congress for twelve years.I would certainly take great pride as I always have done heretofore in the protection and care of this great National Park and I feel that if you would be kind enough to write or tell the President who I am and what you know of me as a Representative in Congress it would go a long way in securing the appointment." On verso is Cannon's holograph statement addressed to "the President" supplying the requested recommendation: ".John W. Maddox was for several terms a Democratic member of Congress from Georgia. He was one of the most efficient members of the minority & while a good partisan had the ability & courage to distinguish between partisanship & legislature.if I had the authority I would appoint Mr. Maddox" signed "JG Cannon" dated 9/11 1908. unknown

Flake 9496a.

There are thirty lines of text including the title printed on the recto and 36 lines of text printed on the verso. The opening paragraph reads: "Voters of Utah Beware! From many parts of the Territory the information comes that the Democrats are resorting to the most despicable and cowardly methods to gain their ends in the approaching election of Delegate to Congress. Not content with the public discussion of the principles of the two parties they are circulating the most calumnious statements concerning the private life of Frank J. Cannon the Republican candidate for Delegate to Congress describing him as lewd and as practicing open immorality to such an extent that he has lost the religious standing he had among his people. The men who have started these foul slanders knew full well the effect they would have among a certain class of citizens and they cunningly laid their plans to have them circulated where they would have the most damaging effect. How weak must a cause be when its advocates have to resort to such contemptible tricks as these to bolster up its falling fortunes! . unknown
