Cannon was the first to use x rays to study the digestive system; his work laid the foundations of gastrointestinal radiology. The present paper written while Cannon was still a medical student describes Cannon's first experiments with x-rays to examine the mechanism of swallowing including his first public demonstration by means of x-rays of the phenomena of deglutition. This ground-breaking work was undertaken less than a year after Roentgen's discovery of the x-ray. DSB.
. unknown books

12639Original Civil War half plate 4.5" x 7" tintype showing a Rodman naval and siege cannon with 6 unidentified individuals posing by the cannon. Rodmans were among the heaviest and most powerful guns of the Civil War. Due to their size and weight these cannons were used during the civil war in fixed positions in batteries and forts to protect the waterways. These weapons weighed 42500 pounds and could hurl a 450 pound shot over 4 miles.
Rodman's process permitted larger guns to be manufactured guns that were previously impossible. The Union ordered 8 10 13 15 and 20 inch caliber Rodman Columbiads. The 15 inch Rodman was the largest actually used by the Union during the Civil War. In this tintype we see the backside of the bottle shaped cannon sitting on its metal mount that would hold the 20 ton cannon with 2 men sitting on the mount and 1 standing next to it. Rodmans such as the one pictured here were among the largest of the guns of the period and used in defenses and fortifications. They were capable of firing a large shell or ball up to several miles. Even today these remain some of the largest cannons ever made. A small white flaw underneath the cannon mount does not detract noticeably from the image. In very good condition. unknown books

Original gilt-stamped cloth one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace 1867-1944 on slip tipped to front pastedown: "To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old Béthune. Walter B. Cannon."

First Edition. Cannon professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion the autonomic nervous system homeostasis and stress response. "In the fall of 1916 before the United States entered World War I the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917 he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher first secretary of the Medical Research Committee to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock" Dictionary of Scientific Biography.

Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace consulting surgeon to the First Army British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that "We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts" p. ix.
.
