Sir William Jones was the 18th century British philologist jurist and Orientalist 1746–1794. He was closely involved with significant figures of Great Britain America and India during the American Revolution and the early days of the Raj. He is regarded as the founder of Indo-European linguistics and is best known in South Asian studies as a pioneer of Indology; he founded the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784 which brought together British expatriates in Calcutta to pursue Asian studies and document ancient Indian manuscripts. Hardback set in publisher's unclipped dust jackets. Both dust jacket condition and internally the books are in a very good and clean condition. Cannon introduced the bismuth meal. He showed that bismuth opaque to x rays could be of great use in conjunction with roentgenology in the investigation of the digestive tract. This was Cannon's first major work describing his classic experiments on the physiology of digestion and his applications of x-rays to the evaluation of gastrointestinal functions.</p><p><strong>WALTER BRADFORD CANNON </strong>1871 - 1945 was a protege of Henry Bowditch America's first full-time physiologist and succeeded him as professor at Harvard in 1902. "As a young investigator Cannon continued his research on the digestive system. Working extensively with radiographic methods he investigated gastrointestinal motility the nature of gastric peristalsis the mechanism of swallowing and control of the pylorus. Cannon published his observations and explanations in an influential 1911 text The Mechanical Factors in Digestion offered here often identified as a classic work on gastrointestinal physiology and radiology."
