Bound in full leather boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities corners and edges of the boards lightly scuffed and rounded. Bookplate of Lord Exmouth present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Captain John Northall c1723-1759 was a captain in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and is first recorded in Italy in April 1752 with a Mr Moore. He appears to have entered the service as a teenager and risen rapidly through the ranks. His Travels through Italy was written 1752-1753 but published posthumously and is dedicated to David Garrick who had visited Italy in 1763-4. He warns young aristocrats against being deceived by antiquarian guides in Rome into buying fake paintings presented as originals by Raphael Titian or Michelangelo. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . hardcover

Third edition, with large additions, alterations, and corrections, 8vo (200 x 120 mm), [8], xl, 214, [2]pp., with a final advert leaf, engraved frontispiece and 28 folding engraved plates, cont. calf, upper cover rubbed otherwise a nice copy. John Muller (1699-1784) a German mathematician and engineer, was appointed Head Master of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1741. Later, he was appointed Professor of Fortification and Artillery. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Thomas Francis Fremantle (3rd Lord Cottesloe) to front paste-down.

Thomas bland Strange aka "gunner jingo" was a British solider who during the North-West Rebellion in in 1885 was noted in his service in the Canadian militia. During this time he was a retired major-general and lived near Modern Day Calgary. Tan stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth a little flecked with minor loss to the head of the spine slight loss to the foot and light wear to the corners; front flyleaf laid down on the pastedown with ownership details - see below - still legible in reverse; two small pieces of clear tape on the pastedowns; textblock reinserted in the binding with minor blemishes to the inner hinges and the frontispiece and title leaf a little out of alignment; one leaf pages 15/16 listing those killed in action chipped and creased on all margins possibly detached at some stage; minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy. The ink ownership details of a member of the brigade 32988 Gunner Charles Francis John Davidson are written on the original flyleaf see page 96 for his details in the nominal roll: 'Joined - 11/9/17 Wounded - 2/11/17 Ypres Transferred to Corps Educational School - 7/1/19'. An unusual approach has been adopted for this history: apart from a few preliminaries a chronology of movements of the Brigade 10 pages the Roll of Honour and list of Honours and Awards totally 16 pages the bulk of the book is devoted to biographical information about every member of the unit 217 pages.
