This copy has been restored and in fair condition only. Original cloth spine laid back down onto newer cloth. Cream paper end sheets added front and in back covering the priginal floral end sheets. The original front blank end sheet with the previous owner inscription is vertically split on the paper and detached. Cracks in the gutter with some pages starting to loosen. Text block mostly secure Several upper page corner tips are chipped. A bit of light soil in the gutters of a few pages. The folding map "Sketch of the Battlefield of Ocean Pond 1864" is complete but is split at the folds with closed tears to the brittle paper fair only. Fair condition only. <br /> <br /> An association copy. Signature of "W. J. Hord" located on the front detached blank end sheet. A label on the front paste down reads - "Medical Director Wm. T. Hord U.S. Naval Asylum Philadelphia Pa." Beneath his signature is a note - "see page 150." There is also a later photograph portrait of William Taliaferro Hord removed from some other book and placed inside. On pages 150-154 is correspondence from Jno. F. Wheaton to the author Colonel Charles C. Jones Jr. titled "Head Quarters Chatham Artillery Advanced Lines James Island July 20th 1863." Wheaton summarized the action that took place on July 16 17 at Secessionville regarding an attack on Union gunboats. One of the gunboats was named "The Pawnee". William Hord the previous owner was on the Pawnee and writes in the right margin on page 151: "The "Pawnee" was struck fifty odd times but only our men were killed & about a dozen wounded - W T Hord." There is another old ink note which appears to be written in another hand stating - "Medical Director Wm. T. Hord participated in this engagement." An extract taken from Find A Grave dot com:<br /> <br /> Biography of William Taliaferro Hord<br /> authored by his son Reverend Arnold Harris Hord 1913<br /> <br /> William Taliaferro Hord to whom this biography is dedicated was born March 31832. He was the son of Judge Francis Triplett Hord 1797-1869 the grandson of Captain Elias Hord 1773-1821 an officer in the War of 1812 the great grandson of Jesse Hord 1749-1814 and the great great grandfather of Thomas Hord I 1701-1766. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1853: entered the United States Navy as Assistant Surgeon in 1854: went to the Mediterranean and served on the frigate "Saranac" visiting Smyrna Constantinople and the Black Sea during the Crimean War. He was promoted to Past Assistant Surgeon April 1859 and was attached to various vessels until the Civil War when he was order home from the Pacific Squadron and commissioned as Surgeon in August of 1861. <br /> <br /> He was a Volunteer Aide on the staff of General William Nelson from the battle of Pittsburg Landing to the evacuation of the Corinth Mississippi by General Beauregard. He served also on the steam sloop "Pawnee" of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and participated in several engagements while attached to this vessel. During the year 1863 the "Pawnee" was severely damaged by an explosion of a torpedo. He was detached from the "Pawnee" and ordered to the "Wabash" August 101863 and while on this vessel participated in all operations against Charleston under General Gilmore and Admirals Dupont and Dahlgren. On August 31 1864 he was placed in command of the Medical Headquarters of Mississippi fleet at Mound City Illinois. On November 8 1865 he was ordered to the "U.S.S. Monongahela" and was wrecked November 181867 in the famous earthquake and tidal wave at Santa Croix West Indies the "Monongahela" being almost entirely destroyed. Joel Munsell hardcover

This 63 page large format soft covered book was printed by the Deutsches Druck- und Verlaghaus Julius Waldkirch & Cie in Mannheim. From the training of the battalion at Camp Polk totheir arrival in Scotland via HMS Queen Elizabeth encamping in England and finally Le Havre France on March 5 1945. On March 9 the unit stepped foot in Germany Vise providing anti-aircraft support. V-E Day saw them in Brunswich and Mannheim on V-J Day. Rosters and photos are found throughout the book. Pasted in the rear of the book is a folded map of the 573rd trek across Europe. There is some staining along the bottom and the fore-edge and some general wear but this is still a nice copy of a scarce unit history. The letter 1p. 8vo is a circular and in it Keenan writes: 'Do not be alarmed at the sudden appearance of these instructions. Rather accept them as a fact that some one has your interests at heart'. The instructions 2pp. 8vo are headed 'APPX 3 TO ANNEX D CAMP HOLF SOP NO 2 INSTRUCTIONS TO FAMILIES'. Divided into 13 sections under the headings: Introduction; Wardens; Precautions; Children; Shopping; Special Warning Procedure; Leave; Finally. The map and warning signals 1p. 8vo are printed with 'TROPICAL CYCLONE PLOTTING MAP' above in red and 'HONG KONG'S TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS' below in black. From the private papers of C. A. A. Nicol 1921-2012 OBE CPM AMN who was a 'Member of a joint FCO/MOD department in Hong Kong' between 1970 and 1975. Nicol joined the Malayan Union Police Force in 1950 and served in the Royal Malaysian Police between 1957 and 1967 'to assist in promoting and consolidating the successful transition to full independence. During this period the Special Branch played a vital role in maintaining peace and security in the country.' From the private papers of C. A. A. Nicol who was a 'Member of a joint FCO/MOD department in Hong Kong' between 1970 and 1975. Nicol joined the Malayan Union Police Force in 1950 and served in the Royal Malaysian Police between 1957 and 1967 'to assist in promoting and consolidating the successful transition to full independence.
